Hey ladies, Congrats on all the double blessings on the way.. I just had a quick note to pass along.

I see lots of Newbies with posts saying that they are carrying frats early on in their first posts (like 5-16 weeks), but did you know that unless you are know they are Boy/Girl twins or have had an amnio, there is no real way of knowing if you are carrying frats while they are in utero. Odds are you are carrying Frats because 2 out of 3 are, but you can't be diagnosed with Frats.

That's Correct, There are lots of people (and this includes drs. and ultrasound techs) that "assume" your are carrying Frats because of the 2 sacs and 2 placentas. And there are a lot of moms who assume that too.

I will look forward to reading all the response..

Also I guess that you may think frats if you went IVF, but ID's happen just the same..

Just wanted to add doctors/ultrasound tech's do give out this wrong information as posted above.

Good luck to all in expecting whether they are identical or fraternal.

That is a good thing to post!
I sometimes refer to mine as fraternal (Clomid in my case) but the tech did tell me when we found out we were having twins, "There's two sacs around each of them and ... it's complicated, but 9 times out of 10 that means they're fraternal." So I usually just tell people "We don't know for sure yet but they're most likely fraternal." (And on twin forums I refer to them as di/di.)

I was under this same impression when I was expecting and told everyone they were frat before they were even born...
well.. as you can see from my siggy - they turned out to be ID - so you just never know!

While mine are almost certainly fraternal (they were 2 of 3 five day blastocysts) its still fun to wonder. Of course since the Dr 1s only 80% sure Twin A is a girl that could answer the question!

I also give the same answer- that we don't know for sure, but assume that they're fraternal.

Thanks for this info. I think they are frats, but I'm not for sure since the u/s tech said the membrane is very thin in between them. So I tell people that I think they are fraternal, but they could be ID.

Well, then, with that info, my boys might end up being identical! I could handle that! I guess we will see when they are born. When we had our big ultrasound in August and found out they were both boys, two placentas and two sacs, the OB gave a biology lesson on the likely hood of being fraternal or identical. Can't wait to see my boys now!
