Liam was supposed to be napping and I had gone in a couple of times to put his binky, etc BACK in his crib. I got out of the shower and heard him still awake, so I thought, why don't I get dressed and then get him....maybe one long nap this afternoon will work. Well, next thing I know, I hear SCREAMING, I go in his room and there he is standing in the middle of the room crying. He climbed out somehow and has a bump on his head. :vava: He's wayyyyyy too young to be climbing out of his crib.

Oh no!!! I hope he's ok. Any idea how he did it? My girls are starting to get the concept of stacking things to stand on to climb on other things (ug!!!).

I guess its time for you to look at crib tents.

Mine climbed out at about that age (and didn't have any bumpers or anything to get a boost). I'd buy a crib tent ASAP if I were you. Once they'd done it, there was no keeping them in.

Not sure...he threw everything out of there so I don't know how he did it...probably too much observation of his older siblings.

And Deb, he's never had bumpers so I don't get it? He's a monkey boy maybe??

Wow that's scary! I'm always worried about mine climbing out of the crib ... is there anything else you can do besides a crib tent? I only ask because I've heard that crib tents only work if the crib has all evenly heighted sides (does that make sense?) The back of our crib is much higher than the front, so I don't think we can use one of those!

I'm sorry your little bub got hurt. Maybe he is part monkey??

Erica, Meghan had that type of crib, too. And I don't think they would've worked on them, but not sure. Liam has got my sister's old crib so he would probably do okay with it. The twins didn't start doing this until MUCH later.

It's possible to use the tents with non-standard cribs... you just need a creative installation.

    Front
    Side

Ours stay put even with the boys yanking on them.

Oh no Maureen! Emilie climbed out about 2 weeks ago, but hasn't done it again, but I do lecture her before I put her in the crib to stay in it.

YIKES! Poor Baby Lamb! Glad he is OK and only ended up with a bump.

You never know if this might be an isolated case. I'm also thinking a crib tent maybe the solution.

My 9 yr old did that at this age, and he hasn't stopped climbing yet. I think it is just built in to some kids! I am sorry he bumped his sweet head!

he figured it out so early because he is just such a smart little guy!!

I may take you up on it. I am hoping this is an isolated incident. The twins didn't do it until much later.

Yikes, glad he didn't hurt himself worse! The twins were never climbers but Mason is already- he crawls up the stairs and stands up in his crib and he's only 7 months old!

OMG! He's an adventurous one! Are you going to try a crib tent or just hope he doesn't do it again?

:shok: OH NO! Is it contagious this week or what?? We switched to toddler beds this week, but I agree that he is probably too young for that. I wonder if he would stay put in a PnP temporarily?

Is your son tall? My son almost got out at that age, I caught him before he did it. All my son had to do was get on his toes and kind of lean over the railing and he could have gotten out. I put up a crib tent so he didn't try again. I did have the mattress all the way down too but he's a climber and strong. I hope it was a one time thing for your son.

Maureen, Kevin did this at 20 months and I really did not know what to do! Way too early for toddler beds, I felt. So my sil recommended a crib tent which I really was not thrilled about BUT it has been a God sent! Honestly, I never could live without it now! We got it from BabyCenter... $55 free shipping, came in three days. In the meantime, we used a PnP and a gate at their door. Good luck hunny!

Wow that does seem early! If you have bumper pads I would imagine he used that. Now my boys are very flexible and were able to swing their legs up (without use of anything else) and just pull but this was at 18 months. I would look into crib tents as well, we made the transition to big boy beds at 2.

I also recommend crib tents! They bought me a lot more time with the cribs instead of switching to beds before we were ready. It also stops the "throw everything out and scream" game.

Sounds like you might need to go the crib tent route. I would not be ready to have my 14 month-old in a big bed just yet! I hope his bump went away. :hug99:

Some kids are just natural born climbers. Mine didn't have any older siblings showing them anything and they are dead on 50th percentile for height and no bumpers or stuffed animals... they still learned to climb out very, very early. We currently have a monkey bar structure in the living room and they use it daily. They're hanging upside down and climbing with confidence on a toy with warnings all over it that it's NOT TO BE USED WITH CHILDREN UNDER 3 (I bought it for their 2nd birthday :p ). Gates are a joke and have been since 20 months. They could have climbed over much sooner but would just hang out at the top rather than going over (I guess the height was more exciting than the things to discover on the other side). SO, if you're using gates, it's time to start allowing limited access so it won't be all new and exciting all at once. Believe me, you don't want to go gate-free cold turkey.

OH, and if you have stairs... we had a couple of scary climb-overs on the top of stairs gate and then they learned to push it past the stop so they could ride the gate swinging out over the stairs. There are some kids for whom a stairs gate is more hazardous than not having one. Keep a close eye on him around it.
