when keigin was about two weeks old, she got a little red spot on the side of her nose. it almost looked like she scratched herself. since then it has gotten a lot bigger and puffed out quite a bit. the dr seems to think it will go away on its own. does anyone else's child have one of these?

DD3 has one on her arm. It grew really fast for a while, and then stopped. She is now to the point where is it going away - pretty faint pink splotch now, and not as raised.

    WebMD link
Look about halfway down the page and it talks about them here.

They are pretty common. DD has one on her leg, it is fairly small, and the ped. said it will fade over time.

DD has two hemangiomas, one on her pinky finger (it's really cute, actually, looks like a little lipstick kiss), another on her side. The doctor said they're totally normal and usually fade or go away over time.

My oldest has one in her face (side of her head halfway between eye and ear; it's now pretty much covered with hair). It started at 2 weeks old, she's almost 4 now and you can still see it, but only the first 1 1/2 years it was really thich and visible (about 1/3 inch). It's more common in girls than boys. And as long as they don't interfere with certain functions, it's usually not an issue. They will dissapear in most of the cases, usually before age 5.

DD has one on the top of her head. It started small & flat, and is now raised and squishy. I think it has finally stopped growing, and eventually it will begin to involute and ultimately disappear. Hopefully at some point she'll actually get some hair to cover it, but for now she's pretty bald..... I really hardly ever notice it because she is such a beautiful and sweet little girl, but I'm sure it's the first thing other people notice when they see her -- too bad for them.....

DS has got one on his neck. It is already fading (He is 10 months old) It appeared 2 weeks post birth. It is fading from the middle out (though it is still raised at this point.) I'd say at it's biggest, it was the size of my pinky nail and now it's half that size and lighter in color.

My daughter has a small one on her eyelid and one on the back of her neck. The one on her eyelid is already pretty faded, it's not noticeable unless you are looking for it, the one on her neck is still pretty prominent, but if she ever gets any hair it will be covered up.

What a timely post, I went to my 4 mos check up with my girls this week and pointed out a small red spot on one of my girls heads. The Dr. said it was a hamangioma and like everyone else said that it would get bigger before it went away but would fade in a year or two. He said something interesting about where they come from. I'm so not saying this as scientifically as he did but basically when the baby is in your womb the hemangioma forms where that part of the baby may have come in contact with the placenta and it is actually part of the placenta mixed (?) in with the skin. Very, very common and nothing to worry about. He said in the 1% of cases where it doesn't go away it can be lasered off.

Jorden has one on the top of his hand. It was HUGE at birth. We still get comments occassionally but it has gotten very small and faded quite a bit. But, when he was little, it seemed we got 2-3 comments per day. Our doctor said most cases go away on their own and looks like he was right!

This makes a lot of sense! Ryan's is on his back where he laid on his placenta the entire pregnancy. It grew at 3 months and is now fading into a grayish color. I used to use it to tell them apart when they were really little.

This is kind of eery.. I was JUST emailing a friend of mine from FertileThoughts re: hemangiomas!! My id twin boys each have one that is a little bigger than a freckle!

I would have NEVER known what it was except for one of my TWIN brothers has ONE!! This is kind of weird because my friend from FertileThoughts kid has them also!!

What's the deal w/ twins having them??

I'm not at all concerned about them for any other reason than I AM DOWNRIGHT CURIOUS!!!

VERY VERY COMMON WITH TWINS I GUESS... Very common!!

Alivea was born with one on her stomach. It started out small but grew to a little larger then a quarter and very puffy. She is turning 2 in a week and its almost gone. It isnt puffy anymore, the redness is now turning white and I believe it will completely go away on its own. You can see where the outline of it is shrinking. When they first told me that it would go away, I didnt believe them. How could that big, red, puffy thing go away? But it is....

yes, my ds has one next to his left eye. it wasn't there when he was born, appeared and grew. he had to have 3 steroid shots to make sure it didn't get too big and affect his eyesight. it has gone down significantly and he is 17 months old. the dr. said it should be gone before he goes to school. he may have to have some surgery to remove excess skin, but that is it. i don't notice it anymore, but others always comment, "what happened to his eye" or little kids point to it and try to pick it off!!!

My DD (singleton) has two. One is on the arch of her foot and is about the size of a nickel. It has faded and involuted significantly, but is still visible and slightly raised three years later. DD also has one on her right side that has NOT involuted much at all. It is probably the size of a lime and is raised about .5-1 inch. Her dermatologist thinks it may shrink some, but we are supposed to bring her back in a few years for a checkup. Some doctors use steroids to treat the largest and most invasive hemangiomas, but they have not been mentioned in her case.

One of my girls has one on her head right inside her hairline. I have been told that it is very common for preemies to have them, but never heard about it being common in twins.

my little chloe has one too. She got a little red bump at 2 weeks as well & now it is raised & bigger (still pretty small though).
It is on the top of her head - looks like her hair will cover it, but I guess it could get to be pretty large possibly?
our Pedi said it should get bigger before it goes away though.
We just have to wait & see I suppose. I was mostly worried about it getting bumped & bleeding?
I was glad to see this post as I had never heard of this before seeing chloe's & now I know that it seems pretty common!

My DD has one on the side of her head. My pedi just said to keep an eye on it, that it will probably get a little larger, and then start to fade. If it hasn't started fading by one year, then she said we should check into it further.

They are common in preemies, girls and those with a family history of hemangiomas. My girls got all three ! My one has one on the side of her head, the other twin has one over her eye and eye lid and will be starting oral steroids in a high dose. You can check out www.birthmark.org website for more information. Most doctors don't do anything until they are closer to 3-4 years of age before starting school.

Wow, now that I think about it, DD did lay on the placenta on the left side of her body. She has one on the front part of her bicep by her shoulder. It was very small and showed about 2 weeks after birth. It has gotten bigger and puffy and grey around the edges but our pedi said what all the others did...it will shrink and fade. DS has two very small ones on his back that I just noticed about 6 weeks ago. They haven't grown and doesn't look like they will.

My 2 oldest boys have them; my oldest has 2, one on his neck and one on his head. The one on his head has faded and lightened up a lot. The one on his neck is still pretty bright, but isn't growing anymore. My other ds has one on the inside of his top lip. It also isn't growing and not very noticible. My doctor told me that they will go away with time.

My daughter Allyson has a hemangiona on the top of her head. When she was born it looked like a little red freckle and has grown significantly in the past four months. It is now the size of a quarter and is about a 1/4 inch raised on her head. Since it was at the top of her head, our pediatrician recommended getting scans to make sure it wasn't rooted to her brain. Thankfully, it wasn't! She also recommended going for laser treatments in order to reduce the size and dark color. She said it would probably continue growing if we didn't do this and she was worried she might fall when she started walking and puncture it. We've already gone for two treatments, and have already seen a significant difference in color and size. :) I didn't realize how common hemangiomas are until I started reading up on it!
