I posted below about the CIO! Sarah is having a melt down. How long am I suppose to let her cry this hard?

I believe for a true CIO you just let her cry until she falls asleep. However, I think you keep going back in after longer increments and doing a "shush pat" on the back to let her know you are there and then walking back out. I read Healthy Sleep Habits by Weisbluth and he said to let them cry at night unlimited so they dont learn to just cry to say 45 minutes and know that you will pick them up. Good luck. Hang in there. Hope this helps.

If you cant take it, there is no rule that says you cant pick her up and try again another night?? This may not be the solution for you and her.

If you are dong Ferber, you would go in after 15, then 20, keep increasing it by 5. I did not go in at all, it made the crying worse. :hug99: :hug99: :hug99:

    I merged your two topics.

We went in and patted/calmed her ut she only cryed harder. She is at the point of gasping now. It's been 20 minutes. And she is not easing up AT ALL! TO make matters worse, we were stuck at my grandmas until 9 last night due to rain & they didn't fall asleep until 10. They have been grumpy all day. Maybe not a good night to start this.

Probably not the night then...Maybe you can try again when she has a couple of good naps during the day and you can catch the window of sleep better for her. The going back in only worked for a bit and then it just made it worse at the pp said.

thanks ladies! They are both asleep. Kaylee on her own. Sarah, we ended up getting out & rocked to sleep. Took like 5 min. We'll try again tomorrow night.

Luckily we never had to do CIO for bedtime, but definitely for naps with Owen. It depends on your babies temperament, but what worked best for Owen was to let him CIO until he fell asleep, or an hour, whichever was first. I agree with the PP that going in and "soothing" was not soothing at all, it just started him all up again! We did let them CIO for bedtime, but it never took more than 10-20 minutes, we were lucky with that. They are so sleep trained to go to bed at 7:00, they have no problem falling asleep....consistency is key!

    Good luck!

Thank ladies! I'll log on tomorrow before we start the bedtime routine around 6:30. I'll get on here & keep you all posted! :) Thank you so much for calming me down!
