Need help with a pacifier rash.

Eli has had a pacifier rash for the past 4-5 weeks and it keeps getting worse instead of better. No matter what I do. The only time I ever let the boys have a Paci is when they are in their crib or on a long road trip.

I wash the Paci's everynight. I alternate putting Vaseline and Aquaphor around his mouth 3-4 times a day. Even put a little vaseline around the inside of the Paci

So far nothing is helping. It will start to get a little better it seems then flare up worse than before.

Taking the Paci away is not an option right now b/c he loves to have a buttload of them in his crib at nightime to play with and suck on. He sleeps with one in each hand and one in his mouth :)

I saw a Nuby Pacifiers at BRU today that were open in the middle but they only had the 0+ Mos size. Before I drive all around looking for the Pacis I'm wondering if they will even help?

We used to call it "binky burn". We haven't had it in a long time but when they were teething (and drooling a lot), it always showed up in the perfect shape of the binky around their mouths. Aquaphor always cleared it up for us very quickly since it works as a moisture barrier. That fact that you have seen it going on for more than a month makes me think that it has evolved into some kind of infection, either bacterial or yeast. You might want to show the doctor just to make sure it's not infected. I hope it's gone really soon!

I boil my pacifiers every so often and it seems to help with the paci rash. Or, you can microwave them for a couple of minutes before they use them. Let them coll before giving back. I think the rash will clear on it's own with little use and these bacteria-killing ideas. at least my boys' rash did.

    Thanks Ladies!

I had the Pedi look at it last week at their well check. She was the one who suggested the Aquaphor and Vaseline.

Other than boiling( we pop them in the bottle sanitizer) what could I use for the bacteria? Is there any topical stuff I can use but would still be safe if ingested?

BabiesRUs sells their own brand that has vent holes all over the plastic part. Aquaphor + those kinds of pacis resolved the paci rash issue for us.

My daughter gets the rash alot and my pedi gave us a prescription for a cream called Elidel. It's great and is not a steroid, so it has no side effects. Aquaphor just wasn't doing it for her. I use it every few days or just when it flairs up.

plain old A&D ointment works for my DD when she gets binky burn (I like that!)

UM - Hold on. I got a prescription for this from my dermatologist for a dermatitis flare-up. Be VERY careful with this cream. They are studying to see if it has a link to cancer - seriously. It is not meant for long term use and I won't use it after looking up the information on it.
