Hello everyone! This is my first time in the forum and I am curious about any other women from the Detroit Metro area (Oakland Co.) and the doctors they used. I am 17 wks with b/g twins. I am moving back to Oakland Co. Michigan next month from Africa and I really need to get on the ball with contacting a doctor and deciding on a hospital. I don't feel comfortable with just any OBGYN... they all say they can do multiples... I don't believe them. Everything in my body and that I am reading is telling me this is different than my other 3 pregnancies! What do you think? How did you all choose your doctors? What questions do I ask to really find out how much experience they have and what their philosophy is about multiple pregnancy?

Well what are you expectations for delivery? Many US docs, no matter how experienced they are with mulitples, do not want to 'risk' a vaginal delivery. Malpractice in the OB field is horrible and many docs are leaving the field because they can't afford the insurance. So before you decide on which questions you want to ask, you should first decide what you really want from the birth. Also multiples carry much more risks, so you may want to know about your docs privleges at a hospital that has a higher level NICU. Will you be seeing a perinatologist? Have you had problems before that could be amplified this time? etc.

I forgot to say: Welcome to the board! And Congrats on your pregnancy! [IMG]

I live in a NW suburb of Detroit (Oakland County). I started with my OB/GYN, who I have had for years and really like. She was with me through many years of infertility and she had her children via IVF.

So after finding out I was PG with twins and my RE saying he didn't think I needed to see a peri, I went to my OB/GYN. Once you are PG you had to see the group of doctors, all of them, during your pregnancy, since whoever was on call would deliver you. I made an appointment and said that I was PG with twins while doing so.

First question the doc asked (not my doc) - why was I there? Well, I'm PG with twins. Calls for an U/S at my next visit, 2 weeks later. U/S tech asks me why I am getting the U/S (uh, preg with twins and isn't that somewhere on my chart yet???)

Third visit scheduled with my actual doc and I get a call that morning saying she was sick that day and can they re-schedule me for 6 weeks later. Should I be going that long being PG with twins?

The doctors kept saying they had lots of twin experience. The hospital I would deliver at with them was very close to home but did not have a level III NICU. I started feeling very uneasy about staying there and truly feel I was having mommy's intuition about switching docs.

So I switched to the University of Michigan. When I called they asked me detailed questions and as soon as they got to the twin pregnancy part they said I would definitely see the peri group and labeled me high risk. My first appointment was at 13 weeks and it went very well and they spent a lot of time with me talking about the whole schedule of visits, activities, etc. with a multiple pregnancy. Delivery would be attempted vaginally if that was my wish, and the criteria for trying that and how they determine if they can try it.

Next visit, 3 weeks later, they did a cervix length measurement (which my OB group didn't plan on doing). My cervix length was gone and I was admitted for an emergency cerclage. That mommy's instinct thing saved my babies, I truly feel that it did. I spent lots and lots of time seeing those peris at U of M, and also spent 4 weeks hospitalized there on bedrest. They are an AWESOME group and I most highly recommend them.

For me, U of M, Beaumont, and Hutzel were all about 45-60 minutes from my house. I went with U of M because in my mind I felt they were the best NICU in the state. And I did end up having babies in the NICU for 5 and 6 weeks. The NICU there is also awesome.

    Hi,
I live in Oxford. Oakland County, Michigan and am going to the High Risk Clinic at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Women's Center. Headed by Dr. Kazzi. My regular OB/GYN did not think she could handle this pregnancy being high risk and Twins... so since I had went to Dr. Kazzi for the High Risk consult and they were highly recommended for my pregnancy. I ended up being transfered there. (after all, this is what they do... high risk pregnacies and multiples are their specialty.)
I am very impressed with the Dr's and everything at St Joes.
Their office number is 248-858-6272. 44555 Woodward Ave, Suite 501 Pontiac, Michigan 48341
Hope this helps. Congrats to you and yours. [IMG]
