I am 20 weeks pg with boy girl twins. I wasn't exactly teeny when I first got pg and am 5'1. I have lost a total of 14lbs since the beginning of my pregnancy. 9lbs from beginning to 12wks, 4lbs lost bw 12 wk and 16 wk checkup and another lb between 16wk and my 20wk apt. today. I haven't been getting sick or vomitting.

Doctor was concerned and asked if I have been eating. I have been! Just getting full so fast and not hungry for another 5 hours. I just feel full all day. He said I need to beef up my calories when I am eating. I am also a vegetarian so wondering if this has to do with the weight loss? With my singleton I gained 31lbs. Anyone else having trouble gaining weight. I am worried about it but at my last ultrasound apt. Both were 7ounces and on track. My next Ultrasound is Sept 3rd. My stomach is def growing, I feel like I did at 6.5 months with my son I am just losing it everywhere else, my arms, face, legs, etc. Do u think it is okay if the babies are still growing fine? Any suggestions on how to start packing on some pounds?

I felt horrible today when I was at my checkup, like I am doing something wrong. Anyone else going thru this?

    Thanks ladies!

I've lost 7 pounds since I got pregnant...like you, mostly in my face and stuff, but my belly is growing right on track and everything...but I have absolutely no appetite whatsoever...and usually when I'm done eating, I feel sick. My doc said not to worry about it, that it was fine, and the babies are growing fine...but I also have gestational diabetes and have to watch what I'm eating on top of everything. *sigh* I totally sympathize. Maybe we should try protein shakes?? I've heard that those can be really helpful if you don't have an appetite or aren't getting your calories in.

I only gained 14 lbs by the end of the pregnancy when I had full term healthy twins 5.7 ans 6.11. Relax, some of us are well endowed beforehand. Drink 3 ensures a day - and you will be fine!

I also lost weight in the beginning. I did end up gaining 30 lbs by 38 weeks.

As long as your are eating and getting that protien.. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

Relax momma!! You're certainly trying to do everything right and not doing anything wrong!! With small appetite and all, you have to make everything you eat count. Since you're a vegetarian, I suppose you can try snacking on nuts through the day to provide you with a good supply of protein as well as calories from the good fats. If milk is permittable in your diet, you can also make your own shakes with ice-cream in 1L bulk, chill it, and sip it throughout the day. Alternatively, you can try out Ensure plus, Boost or commercial protein shakes like many have suggested.

I've not gained a whole lot, only about 4kgs since the beginning, but my babies are on track too. Don't worry!!

I started out a normal weight for my height, but was so sick that I lost 11 lbs. Didn't gain a pound until 18wks when I stopped throwing up, and have slowly been gaining ever since. I'm now up 12lbs from starting (so 23lbs total in 12 wks!). And I'm a vegetarian, too. :) Lacto-ovo, I'm not sure if you're vegan or not.

I'm trying to focus more on nutrition than on the weight itself. So far each of my babies has been measuring the same size that my singleton baby was, so obviously the nutrition part is more important than the number on the scale. I make sure I get enough grains & veggies as usual, a bunch of extra fat--like real butter, ice cream, flax oil-- and then focus my energy on as much protein as possible, from as many different sources as I can. I found a dairy-based, non-soy protein powder in a health food store that's basically all protein, no extra stuff in it, and I'll mix that in to rice milk to make a "chocolate milk" type snack or make a milkshake out of it. I buy trail mix so I can grab handfuls of nuts whenever I feel snackish on the way through the kitchen ;), eat yogurt as a snack (sometimes with a little protein powder sprinkled in), add cheese to my eggs in the morning, eat a slice or two of cheese when I have some fruit (helps even out the blood sugar anyway), and make sure I'm eating whole grains so I get protein from that, too.

So far so good, my OB thinks I've been doing great with it. Sometimes it's hard because I also aim to drink between 50-60oz of water per day, and that really fills you up. I just sip on my water bottle with a straw all day and make sure every time I eat I am getting some form of protein. Those 5gs here and there really add up by the end of the day! I hope that's helpful. And hopeful. :)

I was really sick in the beginning too and lost 10 lbs. I started gaining weight about 22 weeks and have now put on about 12 pounds in the last 5 weeks or so. . .I wouldn't worry too much. My OB is not worried because she says the babies get the nutrition they need from our bodies and not necessarily from the foods we eat. . .Hopefully you will start gaining soon like I did!

My doctor also told me that it should be fine as long as the babies were growing on track. One thing he said that makes sense, is that he worked in Africa right after med school, and that in areas where there is starvation, the babies are born fine, maybe 6oz to a pound lighter than a baby in a developed country, but still fine. He also said the same thing, that our bodies feed the babies, and our food feeds us. In fact, here, they don't even weigh pregnant women unless the have eating disorders when they get pegnant. I wouldn't worry too much. I'm a pretty substantial eater normally, and I have NO intertest in food right now either! Drink loads though, and I'd try and have those protien shakes and take your vitamins so you don't get anaemic! Good luck!

I wasn't overweight at all when I started, so I was kind of worried when I was losing weight in my first trimester. But now that the nausea and vomiting has stopped, I've been eating tons of small meals, and have started gaining weight. Some of the things I eat are, half an avocado (my DD gets the other half LOL) yogurt (I like stonyfield farms yo mommy) a protein shake, crackers topped with peanut butter, cheese or hummus, a banana or other fruit, celery or carrots, or basically anything that sounds good. I cook regular meals for my family, but don't sweat it if I can't eat much, because I know I'm getting enough between meals.

I, too, have had issues gaining weight. Though not as bad as with my first pregnancy that was severe IUGR so they fed me like I was having quads.... I'm so glad to be off THAT diet.

Another thing that might help the vegetarians is Flax Seed Peanut Butter.... they sell it in body building stores. It's all natural and has about 3 times the protein of regular peanut butter. Tastes good and makes it an easy spoonful of protein a few times a day.

I also do the Muscle Milk. It's non-lactose. After the first 2 it actually tastes good, especially with yogurt as the base to make shakes! :) And that's 22g of protein in one drink.

Also, Special K has a Protein water. It's tasty (all but the lemon) and works great to go with eating other things. And it's another 5g of protein there.

Overall, it's really easy to get a LOT of protein a day, if you know what to look for. Keep in mind, Snickers bars have 5+ grams of protein (especially the ice cream ones). Even Oreos have protein in them.... so make sure your SNACKS even have protein. Add a glass of milk, add a few pieces of cheese to crackers, etc. It can be done! :) And if you know that you are consuming what you should as far as protein, then what you weigh is less of an issue. It's all about development, baby! :)

    Hugs,
    Dominique

Oh TRUST me... I check that nutrition label on ALL my favorite foods! Which means I've given up a few things (like Cheetos), but I've definately replaced them with "PROTEIN".... especially if it's tasty! :)

Just watch that sugar intake.... but one a day shouldn't be too bad! :) And the ice cream bar Snickers are even higher in protein, just sayin'! :)

Thanks ladies for all of your great advice. Glad to know I am not alone! I can't wait to start gaining weight though, it will help me feel accomplished....if that makes sense?

I will def. start paying more attention to the nutritous value of the food I eat too so I can ensure the babies are getting the nutrients they need. I need to pay more attention to my protein intake. I don't think I am getting enough. Thank you for all the great ways to get the protein I need!

I appreciate all of your replies and Help!

I only gained 19 pound the whole pregnancy. My doctor wasn't concerned because the boys were growing fine - she said that they get everything first, and I get what's left over.

I didn't start my pregnancy very small. At the end of the 1st trimester, I had lost 33lbs. Since then I have only gained 11lbs back. DR isnt concerned, Babies are growing ( BIG) and I keep down my prenantals and iron pills.

I dont base my accomplishments on my weight gain in numbers, I dont feel thats healthy. I base it on my growing belly and they estimated weight of my babies.

Good Luck Mama! Im sure the babies are doing wonderful!!!
