My boys are grunting at night and do it for hours sometimes. I dont remember my other sons grunting like this. If one starts it gets the other one going. I googled this and didnt find much help. I thought it was gassy tummies and tried mylicon after each feeding or when they would grunt. That didnt help. Then last night at around 5:00 one baby was wide awake and grunting for an hour I ended up putting him in the swing and he went to sleep until 8:30. Do you guys know what is going on or have any advice? DO you think this is normal? I am not getting any sleep (as if I was getting any before they started this!) and is keeping my dh and I up they are so loud!!! Thanks for any advice!

My twins used to grunt ALOT when they were younger, my pediatrian said it was a preemie thing, and perfectly normal....I don't know if your babies were preemies?? I remember the first few nights I had my DS home (he came home) I stayed up all night listening to grunts......Don't know if that's what your two are doing........??

My twins are 8 weeks (born at 33 weeks). My DS grunts ALL the time but my DD doesn't. I was so worried that I video taped my son grunting and showed the doctor. Like the pp, the doc said it is a preemie thing. My older kids didn't do this. It is very hard for me to sleep thru. My DH has no trouble sleeping thru it.

Our DS grunted so much we started to call him our little caveman, and it did keep us up at night. In our case, it was due to reflux. He stopped grunting as soon as we started him on meds Rx'd by the pedi, at about 6 weeks old. Still on meds now at 4 mos, grunts and clenches his abdomen if he's having an off night or wakes late after meds are due, but otherwise he is silent when sleeping.

    Good luck!

Caleb grunts most of the night, too. It drives me nuts. Try looking up "grunting baby syndrome"- thats when babies have trouble pooping/passing gas due to trouble coordinating pelvic floor muscles. I'm pretty sure thats the trouble w/ my ds, b/c he has no other symptoms of reflux. They usually grow out of this by 3-4 mo's, I hear.

My DS is the same way! My "little grunty bear" is what we call him. . .I asked the doctor the same thing and like pp's said, he said it was a combination of a preemie thing and some kids are just grunters. . .His twin, My DD does not grunt at all. And my 3 year old never did that either. . .They are just over 3 months old and it has gotten much less frequent. . .

Our boys used to grunt terribly, no other symptoms besides bad gas...Dr put them on reflux meds, it seemed to help. We also put them in carseat swings to sleep. I also googled at the time and found no info, I finally called the Dr and they prescribed over the phone, it just didn't seem normal to make that much noise!

Mine started grunting at a couple of weeks old. By the time they were three months old, it pretty much stopped. What you described sounds perfectly normal. Btw, ours were born at 38w 1d, so they were not even preemies.

Grunting was our first sign of reflux.

My boys grunted a lot and we had no reflux issues. The ped told us that babies produce more saliva/mucus than they can sometimes handle and the grunting is because of this. She also said it is more common in preemies.

DOnt know about grunting but jack sounded like darth vader when he was little!! All that heavy breathing and wheezing drove me mental (doctor told me their was nothing wrong just what some babies do). I couldnt sleep with him in the room either so moved him to his own room very quickly.

My son also grunted and I couldnt stand it, we had to move him to his crib. He was 8lb, so he wasnt a preemie. He also didnt have reflux ever, so that wasnt it either. Never got an answer, we just thought that he did it to comfort himself. It never bothered him, just us.

My son grunted and we discoved it was reflux. Sleeping more upright helped, as well as holding upright for 30 minutes after any feeding.

My boys grunt also and it has actually gotten a lot worse lately. They also have really bad gas, which wakes them up at night. Most nights my husband will take them down to the swing by early morning, which helps them sleep. I posted about this a few weeks ago and everyone thought it was reflux even though they don't spit up often. We go to the doctor tomorrow for the 4 mo check up, so I'm going to ask about it then.

My DS grunted all the time too. He did have reflux & when we finally got that under control with medication, he was still grunting! And then one day the grunting turned into cooing and then into babbling and now it's "DadadadaDADDADADA!" all day long! He's just a really vocal baby apparently.

At 4 months, I brought my son in to the ped for his grunting noises. It had been going on prior to the 4th month but that is when I brought him in. We went to an ENT specialist. He was diagnosed with larynxgomalaysia. It is simply a condition where his larynx is soft/immature. Children grow out of this by one year but my son actually grew out of it by 6 months.
