Ellie is 6 months old, and she has been drooling like a mad woman and biting on everything in sight for a while, but today she refused 2 of her 4 bottles. She was otherwise happy throughout the day, and even took in about 1/2 jar of food at two meals.

I'm pretty sure it must be due to teething. I'm wondering if anyone else had this happen, and if so how long it took to resolve itself. Also, when should I start to be concerned about her formula intake? She only took in maybe 15oz today, and only 2-3oz over the course of her last two bottles. I won't be quite so worried if she drinks well in the morning, but if she keeps up with the refusal, what should I do?

    Thanks,
    SUzi

try rubbing her gums with your finger before giving her the bottle and maybe let her take breaks. It could just be that she is a busybody, they really get so into what is going on around them settling down to eat a bottle is hard. Also maybe the flow on the nipple is too slow? IDK mine do this to me off and on, I immediately think teeth everytime too but those buggers have yet to cut one! :D

Thanks for the suggestions. The thing is, she won't even suck. We using #3 nipples for Dr Brown bottles (just switched two weeks ago), so the formula pretty much spills out. She will just gnaw on the nipple, and let the formula pool in her mouth and then spill out. I tried waiting 5 minutes and then trying again - even a half an hour, but still nothing. As I mentioned, the rest of the time, she's smiling and happy as can be!

She is old enough that she will know when she is hungry. I wouldn't worry. She will eat when she is ready. DOn't stress.

    I agree with this!

My DD is the exact same way and I worried/stressed needlessy when she was first teething. We had days where it was a STRUGGLE to get her to drink more then 10/12oz in a day and she wasn't eating either. It seemed like all I was doing the whole day was trying to get her to drink just an oz or two more and she always fought it. It lasted off and on for a week or so but when another tooth started popping through we went through the same thing....she's got 2 teeth now and looks like another is on the way because today she drank 4 bottles but only half the formula from 3 of the bottles. I was concerned and asked my pediatrician and she didn't seem concerned at all so now instead of stressing that she's not getting enough I just go with the flow and offer it but if she doesn't drink it all I'm not going to pull my hair out trying :winking0009: . Usually after a few days she's back to drinking her full 7oz bottle 4 times a day.

    Suzi,

I have the exact same thing going on at my house. Vivian (for the last two days) is just not very interested in drinking from her bottle. She ate her solid food just fine yesterday, but only drank about 18 ounces. She normally has about 28 ounces a day, and never has problems drinking from the bottle. She's seven months old, so about a month older than yours... but she was six weeks early, so perhaps our babies are going through the same thing. We have tons of drool here too, and both of my girls are chewing on EVERYTHING.

I tried rubbing Viv's gums, taking breaks, etc and nothing really worked yesterday. I did actually do a dream feed while she was asleep about 10pm just to get some extra ounces in her (and that worked... she drank five ounces).

I'm not happy you are having the same problem, but it is nice to know I'm not the only one!! I hope that if it's teething, the tooth pops through soon! I'm watching her diapers like a hawk, and she was still wet and happy this AM! I hope today is better for both of us!
