Jonah has developed a horrible diaper rash today. He is hurting so badly that he screams and shakes when I change him. He can't even walk. I rocked him to sleep and lay him on his tummy to sleep. Just awhile ago, he rolled over and woke up screaming from the pain. :-( I've given him Motrin, but it doesn't seem to be helping with the pain. Any ideas? I tried giving him a bath with oatmeal, and he screamed so bad when the water touched it.

    HELP!!!!

My girls would get them so bad they would bleed when they would eat things they were allergic to. We used bacitracin with vaseline on top until the allergen could get out of their bodies. No other diaper cream would work.

Is it a yeast infection? My girls still get them pretty bad but they never complain that they hurt...just that they itched. But those come on fast and furious. We use prescription Nystatin for those.

I would coat him with vaseline. I would think it would sting every time he potties even a little bit, and vaseline would shield him from that. As soon as I could though, I'd go back to some type of zinc oxide ointment to dry it/toughen it. Ouch, poor little guy. My girls get that when they go overnight and don't wake up from it.

DS got a couple of really bad rashes when he was young. He would act the same way. One time it bled. I put some neosporin with pain relief on it to help clear up the sores. Then I kept 40% zinc oxide slatherd on thick, and vasaline to help keep any more moisture touching his skin. It will take awhile, but it will clear up. Keep giving him Motrin for the pain.

In addition to the above suggestions, if you use prepackaged wipes, you may want to ditch those for a little while and just use wetted paper towels and blot things off and wipe as little as possible. We had to try this for a little while while we were trying to get one of the girls through a particularly nasty diaper rash :(

I would actually make up a bunch a head of time and put them in an old wipes container that I had.

Yes! I forgot to say we did that too. Those wipes really STING a sore bottom. :(

Corn starch (no, I'm not joking) from your kitchen can also be VERY soothing and healing.

Ditto on the neosporin if it's yeast.
I've also heard of putting milk of magnesium (liquid) directly on the sore parts.

A&D ointment works wonders for Luke & he gets them really bad too. Shakes & screams when I change him, it is the saddest thing I've ever seen. I've had pretty good luck with Boudreaux(sp?) Butt Paste but nothing seems to work with A&D. Oh, and I would hold off on baby powder if it's cornstarch, someone on here posted once that if it's yeast it can make it worse.

Aw, poor little man! Triple paste is our life saver. Definitely plain water to clean, then some neosporin or aquaphor on the very sore spots followed by triple paste all over. Religious use of this method usually clears it up in a day.

Poor little mite. We just had something similar sounding with Maia. We tried a variety of things (zinc oxide, titanium oxide and a topical corticosteroid), but in the end had to go back to the doctor who gave us something called Silverol ("silver sulfadiazine: topical antimicrobial for the treatment of burns, pressure sores and infected leg ulcers") and another cream called Biafine ("triethanolamine: sooths burns sunburns sores and wounds") which we alternated. By this time there were two red raw patches on her bottom. The latter cream helped to sooth the pain and the former helped to heal the burns within a few days. Hoping you won't have to go this far and something over the counter will work for your little one.

An angry red rash is diaper rash, raised ridges are yeast infection. A bad diaper rash can quickly turn into a yeast infection as well- yeast is everywhere on the body all of the time. That said, if none of above typical methods work, ask your doctor for a Rx. Niastatin cream is okay, but I find that the Niastatin powder is even better. The OTC creams are actually a higher dosage of Niastatin, but the powder just works better for some reason, probably because it helps dry things out. We use Cholestrolymine, which is a compound. Works GREAT! It is pricey though, but is so worth it when the rashes are raging.
Once you conquer it, I highly recommend Desitin as an everyday cream. I know people love love love Vaseline, but petroleum jelly can harbor yeast and not only make things worse, but also create a yeast infection. When things are totally clear, I use the Baby Gold Bond powder (no talc). Keeps things dry, the girls get a giggle with the sprinkle, and keeps the diaper area much more manageable. Since I started using this, we have had fewer diaper area problems.

Thank you to everyone for responding! I was freaking out last night. He was so upset. Heartbreaking. Thankfully Jonah was much better today. I let him run around with loose cotton shorts on this morning. He was able to handle diaper changes and extremely gentle touch when applying diaper cream/petroleum jelly. Last night I tried the Mylanta trick and let's just say I will NEVER be doing that again. He flipped out. But really I don't know if it was the Mylanta or just having anything on it. I was able to wash it off with water and he calmed down some. Right now I'm back to doing Flanders (no screaming) and petroleum jelly with cornstarch. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. He didn't poop today so now I'm worried as heck about tomorrow since he'll be at daycare.

Thank you again for the support. I really needed it!

My daughter is having a really bad diaper rash too. It is always on that same spot (area). We tried everything and that included prescription w/Nystatin. I'll be calling the DR in a few more days. I don't do wipe on her and use just a warm wash cloth to clean her. I give her a warm bath every other day with no soap. Also, I also changed diaper brand too to see if that is going to help.

    Thanks for this thread.
