To make a long story short, my kids were given their MMR shot on Oct 15th. On that Wed, they came down with the sniffiles. 6 days from that, they came down with temperatures. With my daughter spiking at 102.6 (Wednesday PM) and my son at 104 (Friday night). We went to the doctor this past Wednesday. On Saturday, amoxicillin was prescribed. We started giving it to them on Saturday. My son has been crying constantly today and attached to me. Their tummies do seem a little upset - lots of gas, little diarrhea. My husband and I are at wit's end and don't know what to do. Any suggestions ANYONE? They don't seem to be pointing to anything else that could be bothering them...we are at a loss.

I always give my babies/kids lots of yogurt when they are on antibiotics. It helps to replace the good bacteria in the intestines that the antibiotics get rid of, causing diarrhea.

What are they on the antibiotics for? Ear infections?

What are they on antibiotics for?

Antibiotics can cause yeast infections in the groin area. Do they have diaper rash?

Ditto on the yogurt. Our pedi always tells us to give them yogurt when on any antibiotics. Hope that helps and you get out of this soon!

Thanks. I wish I could get my kids to take yogurt. Thankfully, they don't have any rashes in groin area.

Will they eat cheese? They have that cheese out that has the same live cultures as in yogurt. Sorry - I didn't catch how old your kids were to see if they are in the cheese eating age yet. Maybe that would help?

Usually, if it was an allergy to Amoxicillin or Penicillin there would be a rash and possibly wheezing. I would call the pedi and have the prescription changed just in case though.

Amoxicillan is evil!!! Just kidding but seriously Cooper can not take it. We tried it once and it tore his stomach up. He screamed and screamed. It's just too strong for some tummies. He now takes either Omniceft or Zithromax for EI's or Sinus stuff. He does much better with those but we still have to give him a probiotic as soon as he starts it or he will get really bad diarhea. You can try the yogurt but if you want something a little stronger you can find an Infant Probiotic at most health food stores or Whole Foods. It comes in a powder form so you can put a 1/2 tsp in their milk or juice. I use it twice a day while he is on antibiotics and then once a day after that for a few days. Also if either of them get a tummy bug we use it. It helps to build up the good bacterial in their tummies that the antibiotics kill and the tummy bugs kill.
