What kind of helmet would you recommend for toddlers at age 2? My parents have a 4-wheeler that they bought a big wagon for the back of it with really high sides. The girls LOVE riding around the barnyard in it (with an adult in the back, of course - hehehe, we like riding too), but my mom wants them to learn that they aren't get on it without a helmet...so she wants me to buy one and bring them to her house. I have no clue. We don't have anything at our house yet that requires helmets, so I don't know what to get...any suggestions?

Excellent question and I hope to see some great answers... Dh and I are going to be buying bikes in the coming weeks and a bike trailer and I want the kids 18m now to have helmets on while riding.......

I got my guys helmets Target for their second birthday. It's there second set they had already outgrown their first set. They have very cute elmo helmets, I got one red and one blue so once I got it adjusted (Sam's head is much smaller even though they are ID) I can keep them straight.

We went to a child safety fair today and they had a helmet clinic where they fitted everyone for free helmets. It really made me feel good since K&K got new bikes for Christmas but I have not let them ride yet because I was not confident in the helmets they had and had no idea how to fit them properly. Anyway, my point is I just looked at who supplied the helmets and it is Helmets R Us. They are a non profit organization that sells all types of helmets, I saw a category on their website for atv's but didn't check to see if they have children's sizes but it might be a place to start. Their website is www.helmetsrus.net.

We just had to get my son a new one as he outgrew the other. I would suggest going to a bike shop. The salespeople there are much more knowledgeable. She fitted my son with three helmets before she was happy with the fit. Also get a Giro if possible they have a trade in program for kids helmets and will discount a new one if your child outgrows the current one. Expect to pay around $25-30 for a basic one and more for a super-duper model.

We ride bikes a lot with the girls in seats on the back, and use these:

    Bike Helmets

You really don't need to spend a lot to get a safe helmet: so long as they pass the CSPC standards, and fit your child's head comfortably, the $7.95 helmet will work just as well as the $30 one.

We got these at Target. You might need to go up a size at this point: our girls have relatively small heads, and Rachael is just about to outgrow this one!

I read a site yesterday when I was researching helmets that you actually don't have to change sizes very often. Head size increases slowly (far more slowly than say legs or feet) and most helmets come with multiple thickness layers of foam. On initial purchase you should use the thickest foam then as the head grows change the foam as necessary.

Karen, did yours come with the foam pieces, looks like yours are from the same company we got out free ones yesterday, they came with 2 extra foam widths?
