Hi I am new here. I have 5 month old boy/girl twins. My little boy was told on Friday that he needs to get a helmet. Just wondering if they can get wet and looking for any advice about this new adventure my husband and I are about to under take.

I'm sorry that your DS has to get the helmet, I don't know anything about the helmets but i wanted to welcome you to Twinstuff. I have gotten a ton of resources from this site!!

The helmets CANNOT get wet. They have to be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide. My DD wore one from 6 to 8 months. What specific questions do you have. Also, there have been a few threads about this recently. Search helmet and you'll find them.

I guess I am wondering if it really does work, do most babies adjust to it well. Bobby is so laid back and only cries if he is hungry I am worried this helmet might change that. We have a lake home in northern wisconsin and spend all summer up their but it will be a bummer if he can't enjoy the water up north as well as at my in laws who have a heated pool. I am hoping to get him fitted this week with a helmet from Ortho America. Was interested in the Doc Band but insurance does not cover that one.

My friend's DD has one. If I remember right, they don't have to wear it quite 24 hr/day; more like 20? (Or maybe that was just their own guideline to give their DD a break.)

Hi and welcome to this great site :) I am pretty new here myself but have learned lots already. We have 6.5 month old ITB and Luke has to wear a helmet. We go Friday to get fit for the helmet. Our Dr. told us we could take it off during bath time and when we go swimming. My sister is getting married in June and my husbadn and I are both in the wedding so we will each be walking down the aisle with our boys. I am not going to have him wear it that day. I know its for selfish reason, but that is what we decided. I too am worried how he is going to adjust. Keep me posted!

My DD had the DOC band and it was great. She is a pretty laid back child and wearing the helmet did not change that at all. She didn't mind it one bit. When she had it taken off for good, she would search around for it. We were told she needed to wear hers 23 hours a day. It works like a retainer or braces. The more often you wear it and stick with the schedule, the better the outcome will be. DD wore hers for 8 weeks exactly and they had origionally said 10 weeks. As far as not wearing to for swimming or a wedding, that's not a big deal. I would just try and stick to the 23 hours a day aside from those times. Your kids will adjust to it just fine. Babies are great about things like this. It's the adults that worry more!

Our ds Riley will be getting one in about a month. He has plagiocephally and torticollis. My chiropractor has been treating him for the torticollis. I have seen an improvement with his head starting to round out. I have been working with him on the positional therapy as well as stretching the neck muscles and laying him is certain positions to help round out his head. My ds isn't as laid back and I am wondering if he is going to get irritated with the helmet! I can't wait to see how the helmet helps my ds's head! It's going to great!

I took Bobby to get fitted for his helmet. It is a star band. We pick it up on May 13th. I think my husband is the one that is going to have the hardest time adjusting to his son being in a helmet. I really appreciate all the comments and encouragement I have found on this site. It has been a tough five months adjusting to being a mom for the first time and with the twins. I still have my momments. would love to get involved more in my area, but I do not know of any twin groups near by. I will let you know how he likes his helmet in two weeks

My 6 month DD katharine gets her DOC band helmet next Thursday. She has severe plagiocephaly and torticollis. She's getting physical therapy through early intervention for the torticollis. We're fighting with insurance to cover the helmet. The doctor told me the babies hate getting measured for the helmets a lot more than the actual helmets. We have been told to transition into it, increasing the # of hours each day to 23 hours a day. I'm nervous too, but its the right thing to do.
