Alright, so I have tried TUMS and Rolaids and neither is not doing the trick. I feel like I have heartburn from when I wake up in the morning until when I attempt to go to bed. Is there anything else OTC that I can take while pregnant that will help?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I know where you are coming from. My doctor told me it was ok to take Zantex75 or 150. I have acid really bad and that seems to help me. Good luck

I used to drink water with baking soda in it... it's worth a shot!

I was given Prevacid. Boy what a difference that makes, and if I forget to take it, I pay for it. It was like night and day for me though....so glad I have it.

Sounds like I need to call my doc in the morning and have her prescribe the good stuff!

Yes, you should call your doc. There are things that are safe to take, you should not suffer in vain.

I agree with PP, I was on zantac and prevacid and it made a huge difference. I still had to take tums at bed time but it was so much more tolerable with the meds.
    Good luck

I buy the generic Zantac 75mgs & take 2 in the morning & 2 at night (so 150mgs in the AM & 150mgs at bedtime). I also supplement with TUMS throughout the day as needed, but the on call doc I mentioned that to last week said they didn't recommend using both. I told him it was the only thing that worked for me, so I didn't intend on stopping :). I chose to use Zantac since it was over the counter, but there are other medications that can be prescribed. It was just cheaper for me to get the OTC stuff vs the prescriptions. Also, there IS 150mg Zantac, but it's more expensive for less pills...I'd recommend just getting the 75mg pills & taking 2. I get mine either at Walmart or Walgreens & just buy their brand. They've worked wonders for me!

I had horrible all-day heartburn starting around 16 weeks. After going through an entire bottle of Tums in less than a week and Pepcid AC twice a day and STILL having symptoms, my peri prescribed me Protonix, and I haven't had a day of heartburn since! You still have a ways to go and unfortunately, it's just going to get worse the bigger the babies get. Call your doc and ask for something stronger. Good luck!

I took Zantac and Pepcid AC through my pregnancy and when I couldn't get to that quick enough I chewed on cinnamon gum!! Works like a charm!! (Something NOT minty works best, but any gum will help in a pinch!!)

Papaya enzymes from the health food store are amazing!!! My chiropractor suggested them. I take "Chewable Super Papaya Enzyme Plus" by American Health, that's the brand she recommends. I don't even have to take Tums anymore, which really weren't doing much in the first place. The papaya really works.

I am definitely going to call my doctor also! My heartburn has been getting increasingly worse so I know I'm just not going to be able to deal with it after a few more weeks. I've been downing Tums because I didn't know pregnant women could take Zantac...yahoo!!!

Depending on your health insurance drug coverage, prescriptions can end up being cheaper than OTC. I spent a lifetime of money on rolaids/tums to no avail.

I think I paid $15 for a month's supply of Prevacid and never had another issue with heartburn.

I agree check with your dr. to make sure you can take other things or get a script. You can also try cantaloupe and watermelon to neutralize the acid.

I am currently 16 weeks pregnant with twins and have heartburn all day long also. The pain gets to be unbearable sometimes along with the gas and burping. It makes me not even want to eat which is not a good thing. I see the doctor on Thursday so I'm definitely asking her about Zantac or another. Does one work better than the other or do they each basically have the same thing in them?

PS. Sorry, can't figure out the ticker. I wish I had one!

I don't have any suggestions for the heartburn but wanted to mention something that might explain it?

My good friend had severe heartburn during both of her singleton pregnancies... she said that it was due to the hair forming on the babies. Each of her two sons were born with a full head of really thick hair!

Good luck with the heartburn. I hope your doc recommends something that helps!

Tums never worked for me, so I was constantly drinking Mylanta. It worked SO much better than Tums. I had heartburn from day 1, but once they put me on bedrest it was SO much worse b/c I was constantly laying down. I hope you feel better soon.

I had some nasty heartburn over the weekend and I used milk of magnesia (for another pg related issue I've been having) and that actually worked pretty well for me. Good luck. Heartburn can be so miserable!!

When the antacids stopped working - my Dr. told me to take Zantac 75. It really makes a huge difference because it stops the heartburn and reflux before it happens. I take one every 24 hours.

I took Zantac and Pepcid for most of the pregnancy, but when I needed IMMEDIATE relief while that was going to work I chewed cinammon gum (big red or something) and it gives almost immediate relief!! JUST TRY IT!! seriously, heartburn was a mega problem for me and it works!! (Even in the middle of the night while waiting for meds to kick in!)

I took Zantac 150 pretty much every day for the last 2-3 months of my pregnancy. I started off with Tums and it just wasn't cutting it after a while. I could not stand it, I was sick all the time my doctor told me at that time that it was ok to take Zantac. I think the one that you aren't supposed to take is Tagament.
