Around week 23 i started getting heartburn in the evenings/night. As time has gone on it has gotten worse and worse to the point i have thrown up at night and now i have it 24/7 instead of just at night. I have tried everything i can think of on the natural and pharmaceutical otc side and nothing is helping. Being upright was helping, but now I'm still having trouble while upright and i cant fully sit forward because one of the lil guys is tucked under my ribs and my belly just flat out wont let me. I havent gotten more than an hour or two of sleep in the last few days, eating is becoming more and more difficult because of it, and i am at my wits end! :grr:

Sorry you're so miserable. I know how you feel. I finally figured out that my heartburn was causing a majority or my vomitting in the mornings.

If you've tried the Tums and Zantac already I would suggest asking your doctor to prescribe something stronger. I still take Prevacid and my doctor said that if I needed it he could write me a prescription for Nexium. No one wants to load up on meds while they're pregnant, but when it's causing you this much discomfort you need to take care of you.

I hope you find some relief momma!

I've had to really restrict my diet to no fried foods, no tomatoes, no dairy (in the evening) and anything that is "salty" is out after 5pm. The diet has helped me a lot but I am also still taking Rolaids every night (4) before I go to bed.

Milk and chewing gum helped me..I'm not sure if it was heart burn or acid reflux I had. The other thing is eat small meals.

I take two prescriptions. They do no harm to the baby and I am finally able to give my babies the calories they need. I still need to avoid greasy foods.

I would have your doctor take a look at you. I was noticing horrible heartburn in the beginning of the pregnancy and tums helped. However, one night (more like 3am) my husband had to take me to the ER due to horrible chest pains that increased when laying down (especially on my back). I've had chest pains since I was a little child that they always wrote off as just inflammation of the chest wall. At the ER they did an EKG, blood tests to make sure I didn't have blood clots, chest xrays, etc etc etc.. They gave me percocet and was like "that should make it better." Well it DIDN'T. It made me drowsy enough (after puking) that I could sleep through the chest pains (that continued on for like 3-4 days later). I went into the doctor for a check up and they determined that I have GERDs (or acid reflux). At first I felt like they were just playing the guessing game. Until about a week ago I noticed if I burped or something of the such.. or even just randomly something would come up in my throat and BURN. I told that to my doctor at my next appointment and she agreed (different doc that then first one that said GERDs) that I have it afterall. I began taking the medicine they gave me and I've noticed a difference. So I could have potentially had GERDs/acid reflux for as long as I can remember and not even known. I can see now the different foods and drinks that upset the stomach acid even more! It's really not fun and the doctor just said it'd be worse during pregnancy!

I see my dr on wednesday, so i'm going to try to make it to then and talk to her. having something prescribed may end up being the way to go. I've never had heartburn issues even during my previous pregnancies, so this is all new to me and definitely not something i want to repeat. Thanks ladies!

I took Zantac150 2x a day, the cool blue mint ones.
When that stopped working I talked to my doc and she prescribed Protonix as its in FDA pregnancy category B. The medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby.
    It worked WONDERFUlly!!!

Def try nexium.....its the magic purple pill. I used that with Zantac and it worked wonders!! I had acid reflux/heartburn and was in such pain and lost my voice for the last 2-3 mos of pg because they said that the acid was damaging (temporarily) my vocal chords. I have it all the time but no where NEAR as bad. However, since the twins, I have been on nexium since then, it came back. I hope you find something that works. It really makes eating painful and nightimes just torture. I hope you find some relief soon!

I feel your pain, I have been in the same boat through out this hole pregnancy and it s*cks! With my son I didn't get it till the end but with these two its been happening all the way through. I have to take two pepcid in the morning and two at night (I know th box says one, but both my OB and Peri told me to go up to two) they seem to help 80% of the time, I havent been waking up randomly throwing up from the reflux <_< However there are still days usualy once or twice a week were I need to suck on tums through out the day, there gross and taste like chalk so its my last resort but I havent found anything else thats worked at all.

I took either Zantac or Pepcid with the blessing of my OB and the immediate cure is GUM!!! Get some of the new gums that aren't totally minty - Berry Pearadise and Strawberry Banana Extra! They will quell the symptoms quickly while the meds go to work!! I had it SOOOO bad!!! :bad: It was awful. The good news is the MINUTE those babies came out, all my sickness and heartburn was GONZO! Hang in there!!

I struggled with heartburn before pregnancy, so was already taking Prilosec. My doctor told me that it is safe to continue taking while pregnant, so I have everyday. It works wonders! I've barely struggled and can really tell on the days that I forget. I would totally recommend, especially because it's 24 hour relief! Good luck!

JEnn, no suggestions here but I had heartburn when pregnant (haven't had it since) and just wanted to say sorry. I was surprised at how much it really hurts! Feel better soon.

Wow! I'm sorry that it's sooo bad! Tums never worked for me. My girlfriend gave me her Pepcid AC and it was a life saver!!!!! I use it and my heartburn is gone in about 10 minutes! I'm lucky!!!!

I was having a horrible sore throat problem for about 3 months and an ENT put down a scope and found that acid was creeping up and burning my esophogas and causing muscle spasms in my throat and neck and larnyx.

So they said to do several things to alleviate heartburn and acid....

    EAT SMALLER PORTIONS.
DO NOT LIE DOWN IMMEDIATELY AFTER EATING.
TRY TO SPACE OUT THE NIGHTTIME SNACK AND BEDTIME.
    NO TOMATOES OR SPICY FOOD.
ELEVATE THE BED (HEAD PART) 6" WITH BOOKS.
    USE GAVISCON.
ASK YOUR DOC ABOUT PRESCRIBING A PPI (SOMETHING INHIBITOR).

Within about a week, my problem has cleared up about 85%. It is manageable now whereas before, I could not deal with the pain.

    Good luck!

Gum helped me ALOT. Biggest thing that helped me was eating a whole apple after lunch and a whole apple after dinner. Apples are
very alkaline and they cut the acid. Those are my two natural remedies that I think work better than any drugs!
