heartbeats

new twin mom, U/s at 10 week showed two babies, both measured equal, HB's 164 and 168. Now 12 weeks, when in for check and Dr. could only find 1 heart beat. She didn't seem concerned, said that they are small at this age and 2nd heart beat could be hard to find... no u/s scheduled, doesn't want to see me back until 16 wks.... I'm worried... losing sleep, has this happened to anyone else and was second baby okay?

 

We didn't even know we were having twins until our 18 wk u/s. That was 3 dr. visits of hearing only one heartbeat. I wouldn't worry too much.

at my ob's office, i swore that we were having two - she listended at 11 weeks and said she only heard one. I asked her to check and she ran the monitor over my belly and one was it. At my first u/s at 15 weeks, sure enough, two little guys in there. Keep u're head up and dont worry too much, they are little guys with alot of room right n ow.

I believe that it is normal not to hear two, often they beat insnyc.. also that is why lots of people don't find out they are having twins, until seen on the U/S..

Keep your chin up.. I was a wreck from the timw we found out at 12 weeks until our next appointments at 16 and then again at 20..

 

She checked with a doppler, right? My OB told me at my last appointment we would do u/s at every appointment because you can't usually hear 2 heartbeats on the doppler.

I would discuss this with your OB. And, I would probably try to find one who was more experienced with twins!

 

My dr. too said he was going to do an u/s at every visit because it was to much drama to try and hear them both on the Doppler. And believe me, I love the fact I get to “visit” them every month, some times twice

 

Having been pregnant with twins and singeltons, I'll tell you that it is hard to hear most heartbeats on a doppler at 12 weeks. There were a few times between 10-14 weeks that they couldn't find my daughter's heartbeat, and often could only find one of the twins. It is normal. I know that doesn't take away your anxiety, I know how you are feeling. :hug99:

If you are really getting stressed, ask if you can please have an ultrasound. An OB/GYN doctor should also work with your emotions and feelings. I know my Dr. let us have a ton of ultrasounds, mostly to keep me calm.

I know it is easy to say don't worry, but this is common early on. I went into the ER for stomach issues early on and they tried finding the heartbeats to make sure things were ok with the pregnancy.... Well, I was seen by an ER doctor who actually was so rough with the DOppler that he left bruises on my belly as he was trying to find the heartbeats. After trying to find even one, he said, "what makes you think there are two?"!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was like WHAT THE ****!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING!!!! I was devistated! He did not even try to find a second and also did not give an ultrasound!!! Sometimes foctor's have no clue what to say or how to make their patients feel more confident! Anyway, I guess the point is, I am now 35+ weeks with 2 HUGE babies in my belly! So, although not hearing 2 heartbeats early on can be stressful and scary, your doctor was right they are so small now that it is often hard to hear one let alone 2!

If, however, you are stillreally concerned and worried call your dctor and tell him/her how you are feeling. They may see you again or they may give you some reassurance!

 

Oh hon, I would be worried too and I was right there with you. I'm assuming this was with the doppler???...around 14 weeks my doctor wasn't sure she could hear two heartbeats--a lot of good the doppler does for us, huh? Ours have always been so similar that there's no way to tell them apart. I was in a good mood that day but two weeks later I insisted on an ultrasound for peace of mind. If I were you I would ask for an ultrasound right away just for peace of mind. The chances are very good that they're both doing well but you need to know so you don't stress yourself out too much.

My ob did refer to a perinatologist, so i'm going to wait and see when that appointment is ! Thanks again!

I was told the same thing at my first OB appt at 10 weeks. For this reason (carrying multiples) I got a u/s at every appt. Check heartbeats, growth and fluid levels. I didn't even bother buying a doppler as I knew if I couldn't distinguish between the both I would worry endlessly.

 

My doc couldn't find 2 HB on the doppler until 16 weeks. He said it was not unusual for that to happen!!!

 

I probably would've asked for an u/s to find the other hb. I had an apt. at 13 weeks and they could only detect one with the doppler, so the OB did a quick scan and found both hb. Much more reassuring thatn being told that it could just no be detected. I"m sorry you didn't get to hear the second one.

 

I think that is completely normal about not hearing the heartbeats with the doppler that early. But if you are really concerned your OB is working for you. Please ask for an u/s sooner rather than later if you need to know--I would. You need to try and stay stress free when you can.

 

with my singletons we didnt hear the heartbeat til 16wks -they never even tried before that because its so hard to find one-i can imagine trying to find 2 on such small little beans I feel the same way; its hard to feel safe when u cant really feel them yet and only a u/s can see them

 

My Dr. also does U/S every visit for that reason. On my U/S my babies heartrates are almost always the same also. I have a doppler and even at 22 weeks, I can't really distinguish between them.

 

They have never been ever to find my babies heartbeats with the doppler thing, so i always get an u/s dr said i may have a thick uterus and thats y he cant find them. dont know if thats good or bad. but in every u/s they are healthy growing, moving around, and have strong hb's so keep your head up dont worry much even though thats easier said than done.

 

My peri never tried to find H/B's with the doppler, they did a quickie U/S at each visit to find H/B's. He said it was difficult, especially early on, to find both H/B's with doppler.

This is how it was with me, too. I wonder if you call your doctor and let her know how upset you're feeling, would she do a quick scan for you just to ease your mind?

 

We heard one heart beat at every visit until my ultrasound at 20 weeks when we were surprised to find twins. Then after that they looked for a second heart beat. Don't worry!!

 

I was 22 weeks along and they couldn't find Jessy on doppler because she was to high up in my uterus! We didn't find out I was carrying twins until 24 weeks!

 

I would ask for a u/s just to be sure, so that you dont have to worry. But, like everyone has said, it is difficult to hear both hb so early with a doppler, so everything is probably just fine.

They always had a hard time finding the second heartbeat even when I was in my third trimester. When I would have my NST's in my third trimester they would always have to move the second little doppler around for a long time until they were sure they were picking up a second heartbeat and not the same one. I wouldn't worry, but like pp have said, if you have concern ask for a quick ultrasound.

 

I'm 36 weeks and most definitely having twins, and Baby A's heartbeat has never been found with the Doppler. As recently as last week they tried to find her heart beat but she is a very sneaky baby! I always end up having to have an u/s to find the heartbeats, because Baby A likes to hide! I would try not to worry about it!

 

So glad I saw this thread . . . I spent about 45 min last night with a home doppler at 8w5d and found one heartbeat and was devastated I couldn't find another . . . what a relief! Guess I should just be grateful for finding the one!

 

geee...my mom went her whole pg with my twin sister and I and they never found 2 hbs.... Never did an u/s back then either...she told them she was having twins, they called her crazy and said she was having a big BOY! LOL

Still in this day and age I'd be ticked that they didn't just do a quick u/s to reassure you!

 

my doc only tried the doppler once and she couldn't find either HB (I'm also fluffy so that makes it twice as difficult)...so they did a u/s each month at the peri...
