Hi all. Just got back from my twins' four month checkup. The doctor heard a heart murmur in my little girl. He said he thinks it is an innocent murmur, but referred us to a pediatric cardiologist, who we'll see in one week. Has anyone got any experience with this? I'm trying to stay positive but of course I'm very worried.

One of my boys has what's called a "slow flow" heart murmur. The doctor hears it and mentions it at every check-up, but we've had it checked out, and it's not a concern. It doesn't seem to cause any problems. He was around 4 months when it was first noticed, and now he is almost 3. The doctor said it may disappear as he grows, or it may not. I know I still have a very minor heart murmur myself and it's never caused an issue for me.

I would definitely get it checked out for your peace of mind, but try not to panic because a heart murmur is very often not a big deal.

One of my boys has an innocent murmur. He'll be 3 and has never had any issues. I was told they are quite common. Try not to worry

After jessys heart surgery she still has an innocent murmur. It is caused by the way her heart is formed. She has a 90 degree angle on one of the lung veins so her blood hits the wall before turning. I highly suggest checking it out!

My son is 4 and he has a heart murmur. I don't know if he will grow out of it but it doesn't cause him any problems. My mom has a heart murmur and has had one since childhood, so I think he might be like her and have it for the rest of his life.

I dont have the experience with children (mine are only 7 weeks) but from my own experience, I have a heart murmur, I was born with it and then I had rhuematic fever when I was 5 this made it worse, but as I've grown older it got better, the taxation of the pregnancy brought back some of the regurgitation but I wasn't feeling any ill effects from it, and all if it has gone back to what it was prepregnancy.

Obviously it will need to be followed by a cardiologist but if its like what mine was it won't impact much of her life if at all .

I also have no experience with a murmur in children, but apparently my dad and sister have one and they've never had any monitoring or treatment for it. I think it's more common than we know.

I was told I have a heart murmur also - it never gave me any issues, but doctors notice it. They say it's not a big enough issue to have it checked by a cardiologist. I hope your baby's murmur is the same way also.

My three year old and 4.5 month old girls have wary murmurs. The eldest was detected at her 4 month check up also. She had a VSD (tiny hole between heart chambers) and it closed on its own before she was 18 months and cardiolBy twin fil

Oops. Silly phone. And the cardiologist can no longer hear it. My twin girl has the same thing although has a larger hole and louder murmur which was detected at birth. Don't worry! Easier said than done though! Oh and wary above was supposed to be heart. Posted before I had a chance to read it!

I do echoes (the u/s of the heart that finds where murmurs are coming from) and I can tell you that the very serious defects (requiring surgery) nowadays are usually found before birth. Murmurs are very very very common is children, we probably see at least 5 kids a week that are referred for murmur and have normal hearts:).

Always better to check it to be sure but as long as she's not turning blue when she cries or eats chances are its a pretty benign murmur:). Good luck keep us updates!! Let me know if you have any questions, I look at hearts all day long and literally know then inside and out;)

Great news -- the cardiologist says hers is an "innocent" flow murmur that she'll outgrow in a year or so, and which will not impact her at all. I'm so relieved!!! Thank you all for your reassuring responses.
