Head banging

One of my girls bangs her forehead -- hard -- on the floor whenever she is frustrated/tired/upset. When I yell, "no!!" (out of sheer shock at the force at which she bangs her head), she starts to hit herself with her hands on the head. She has a good inch-sized bruise on her forehead now and it had been yellow from the healing one she previously had. Now it's back to black-and-blue.

She literally drops to the ground on her hands and knees and just starts slamming away at her head. My MIL told me that one of hers (one of my BIL's) used to do it when they were babies, so I guess this is some kind of personality trait? My goodness, though. It's frightening sometimes because she really whacks her head.

I'm scared to see how this pans out as she grows up. Very low tolerance for frustration? But I'm scared too that she's really going to hurt herself....and that people will think I'm a neglectful mother. I just don't know how to make her stop.....

 

I just searched "head banging" and now see that this is a topic oft talked about! Unfortunately. Sorry, should have searched BEFORE post. In the end, I will ignore the head banging, with keeping my third eye on her making sure she's not hurting herself.

 

My nephew does this with his mother and grandmother but never with his father. it does seem to have alot to do with how you respond to it. i know it can be scary to watch. hope s he stops doing it soon. :hug99: :hug99: :hug99:
