He climbed out of the playpen!

My twins are 16 months...DS figured out how to get out of the playpen last week. I was only using it for about 10 mins at most while I start dinner or something and need to concentrate.

How long before he figures out how to climb out of the crib? I don't really want to use crib tents, I don't think mine would like them much. Is he too young to go to a toddler bed? We have crib converts and need to get the mini rails for when we take the side down.

Also, do we switch now before he learns to climb out?

    Feeling clueless!

My dd didn't climb out of her crib until she was 2.5 years old! Then it was a fun thing to do so we made the switch to toddler beds that night. I would wait and see what happens.

My take is if they are climbing out, it is because they don't get the concept of "stay in bed" at that age. So if they won't stay in something that they have to work to get out of, why would they stay in a bed, which is easy to get out of? At 16 months, I would get the crib tent. I only had one, because only one of mine would climb out-and everyone thought he would hate it. Guess what? He loved it! They also have great resale on e-bay--I think after selling mine, it ended up costing me something like $10 for 6 months worth of piece of mind.

Mine climb in and out or their playpen all the time. That is one of their play spots and they constantly hide toys there and play. However, they do not climb out of their crib. They have thrown themselves out of the crib before because they were mad. But since that time (I think the fall scared them--as well as me) they haven't tried to climb out of the crib in over 3 months.

FWIW, mine climbed out of their cribs BEFORE they climbed out of a PNP so it could be any time.

I'd do crib tents again in a heartbeat. I put them up at 15 months (when one climbed out and the other wasn't far behind) and they were the best investment ever. I wasn't sure how they'd take it but they couldn't wait to get in and try their tents. Couldn't have gone better. I know at that age my guys would not have been able to stay in beds (heck, they couldn't stay in a chair for a one-minute time out!) and it would have been a nightmare to try to teach them. With the tents, I can relax and wait until I know they're ready and let them pick out their new bedding and have some say in the new decor... make the switch a happy celebration of growth rather than a disciplinary exercise.

I think I will look into getting at least one crib tent..thanks for the advice! DD still has one level to go before her matress is at the bottom (at 16 months she's 28"!).

DS has been into climbing anything the last few days so I am sure the crib is next! Yikes!

This is definetly an age of constant learning and it amazes me how many new things I see each day.

I also vote for the crib tent. I had to put away the PNP because they were trying to climb in it (I know, weird) and it fell over on top of them.
