Having trouble adjusting to kindergarten

    Hi all,

My girls are 4 and will be 5 on the 26th of this month. The girls have started kindergarten and are having trouble adjusting. They take turns crying everyday! They cry on the playground, cry during music and gym class and cry at lunchtime. The teacher says that they are doing well in the afternoons. Our school district has all day kindergarten and I really think it presents a long day for the girls. I have been putting them to bed really early (7:30 p.m.) to make sure they are getting enough rest, but like me neither one of them are morning people. The girls are in the same class and the teacher is super nice and really tries to comfort them everyday. My youngest twin tells me that she just wants to stay home with me and that school scares her :( .

If they don't stop the crying everyday, I guess I am wondering how long I should wait before considering taking them out and trying pre-K. I am not sure if this is just normal as my older 4 did not have much trouble adjusting at all. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks,

    Tracy

That is heartbreaking. No advice, just throwing some sympathy your way. Hang in there, I think you should talk to the teacher and see if she thinks their behaviour is just the missing mommy blues, or a lack of readiness. Sorry they're having a tough time. I hope things settle down in to a routine for all of you soon.

Sorry they are having trouble adjusting, it is a long day. But you do have to remember they are still only 4 and it was a long day last year when my almost 6 year old went to K (she missed the cut off the year before). So it definitely does take time to adjust to the all day schedule. That said, it is a very long day, even for my almost 7 year old, it took her a good week to get back into the swing of things for first grade this year. Hopefully they will get used to it and adjust soon. :hug99:

I am so glad that when our county went to all day K, they also changed the b-day cut off to Sept. 1, so that all children had to be 5 to enter K. This helped me because my DD was Oct. 11 and it made the decision very easy for me ( no choice).

Why does one of your girls say that school scares her? Maybe you should speak to the teacher about this, so she is aware of it.

Thank you again for the replies and support. It has probably been harder on me than them  . They seemed to have had a better day today. Laya (youngest) said she only cried when someone accidentally hit her cheek. They are dancing around and have filled me in on the fun things they did today. I surely hope we continue in this direction...maybe I am too much of a worry wart; but they are still my babies. Thanks again!

I teach Kindergarten, and I can tell you from experience that it takes some kids longer to adjust. I definitely think that you should stick it out. Things WILL get better! I am one of those that thinks if you pull them out, then they are getting exactly what they want...and you are setting yourself up for the same agony next year when they most often pull a repeat performance. Yes, they are on the young side, and so emotionally they are probably going to take a bit longer to mature and fit in. But they will get there. They always do.
