I've given them both and they do like it. The canned is much more mushy than fresh which might be good for their age. The only thing is that the canned is high in sodium. When I make fresh I boil it after snapping off the bottoms (which are woody and tough) just until tender. I've also wrapped it in bacon and broiled it.

I can't stand in canned, it is way too mushy. I have given it to them fresh. They only ate it after I told them they were eating baby "trees" and not the characters from Veggie Tales! The first time I gave it to them they kept saying, "But we don't want to eat Junior!"

I can't imagine them liking it (because I don't) so I haven't sucked it up and done it yet. I will soon!

    They LOVE asparagus!

I always wonder if they'll eat it since it's so seasonal, but this will be their 3rd year, and I've bought some at the store and they're still happy to eat it!

I think they were just a year when I first gave it too them. I just boiled it in the microwave.

The first year it was ready in our garden was the first year they were starting to eat it. My poor DH!!! He LOVES asparagus and never got any since the boys ate it ALL! LOL

Mine love fresh asparagus. I steam it and they just eat it up! I've never tried canned. It's yummy with parmesan shredded on top as well. Make sure to cut off about an inch from the bottom of the stalk or where it naturally breaks b/c that part is too tough to eat. Beware that it does give their pee a really strong scent!

We've tried fresh (steamed) and frozen... neither were a big hit. They were going through a phase of liking green beans, so I thought they would give asparagus a try. For the last 4 months, they haven't come close to anything green... and not for a lack of trying on my part. My pedi assures me that this is a phase... but it's getting pretty frustrating now. I love asparagus... so I'm hoping that eventually they'll give it another try.

We tried it once; I don't think they went for it, but that's not unusual for the first time with anything. I love asparagus, but DH hates it, so I rarely make it.

Also, I tend to serve the girls frozen veggies (and asparagus doesn't come frozen, as far as I know) because I feel less annoyed when they don't eat them. I know that's not the best way to approach it, but since they rarely eat green veggies anyway at the moment, I just don't want to spend too much time preparing them.

However, if it gives me an excuse to eat more asparagus myself... [IMG] Maybe it will be on the dinner menu someday soon.

I preferred canned veggies myself as a child, but now I can't stand them, so I hope I can get away without buying them, at least not until the girls are old enough to demand them!

Cristina- that was too funny!!! I never thought about Jr from Veggie Tales [IMG] [IMG]

And Melissao- thanks for sharing the pee factor- I probably would have wondered why it was so bad the next day and probably wouldn't have remembered.

I love it!!! My kids refuse to try it but I have dh telling them how gross it is so I guess they never will.

My girls love canned asparagus. They will eat some fresh, but not as much as the canned. Between the two of them, they will eat an entire can of asparagus at a meal. I worry about the sodium, but they love it so much.

I haven't tried canned, since I can't stand it canned and never buy it. I have tried fresh, we usually either steam it, or DH grills it. They don't like it.

The only way my girls have eaten it is broiled. I toss it with olive oil, spread it out on a baking sheet, and toss it under the broiler for a few minutes. They had rejected it until they saw "Uma" eating it on "Oobi." Now they eat a little. Not a favorite (of theirs -- I love it!)

My kids will eat just about anything if they can "dip" it! So, yes thet eat asparagus dipped in ranch dressing! I also steam it, canned is yuck IMO.

I cant even eat boiled asparagus so we dont eat it it that way in our house. If its soggy my girls wont even try it. We broil our with loive oil and salt and pepper. I can eay the whole bunch this way. Shae doesnt like it but Irelynd will eat everyones. I barely have any because she eats so much of it.

Yes -- they liked it on the second try. The first try was the canned stuff (DH eats it, I don't) and they poked their fingers into it, touched it to their tongues, then tossed it on the floor. I lightly steam most of the veggies I prepare and with asparagus, I barely cook it at all. The boys are starting to like more crunchy things so I gave them some of my asparagus and they ate it up. The next diaper was pretty potent.

i served low sodium canned to them. they didn't like it. it was a little too fibrous for them. maybe i had a not so good batch from the jolly Green Giant... I've also served fresh... i don't think they liked it either. but they are going to see it again i promise.

My boys won't go near it (related to their father), but the first time my dd tried it, I made fresh, cream of asparagus soup. She couldn't get enough. She ended up getting a straw out of the pantry and drinking what she couldn't get to with a spoon & then she took mine away and finished it as well.
