I don't know much about beans, but wondering if they would be good foods to feed the babies? Has anyone fed them beans (lima, kidney, chick peas) - if so, what type and did you puree it?

    Thanks.

I've read that yellow lentils are really easy to digest, and they cook up pretty fast, so that might be a good one to start with.

edited to add: we have not yet done beans, but probably will soon.

We have done purreed pinto beans, they were pretty neutral to them. They also have had kidney and black beans (as part of chili) and they love love love those. They eat them whole.

I started beans when they could finger feed. We started with lentil beans because they are soft and small. Then we did the Gerber Graduates green beans-they were just the right size and very tender. Peas are also a good choice too. Birds Eyes makes these Single Steamer bags which are perfect for twins to share.

We did white beans Tuesday. N loved them but M was not a big fan. They were cooked down so much that they were like a puree but not quite. Definitely not finger food consistency.

We've been doing black-eyed peas for months, mashed up. It's an inexpensive protein, and actually, I know you'd think beans would make them gassy, but it actually seems to help with their digestion as far as we can tell. We soak them overnight and then boil them until they're really soft and mash them through a strainer.

We did Lima beans, cut in half or thirds, when they started finger feeding. DS1 liked them, DS2 refused to touch them ;). Once they got about 9-10 mos, they got their 1st taste of baked beans & they LOVE those! To this day, baked beans are a big fav (I don't know what beans are in those :)!!!!)

I used to buy canned beans (preferably the no-salt variety) of any kind for the kids. I'd just pour them into a colander and rinse all the slime off really well then let them practice their finger food skills. My boys really liked white beans, chickpeas, pintos, and black beans.

Ooo, I like the idea of using beans as finger food. I'll definitely try that sometime soon.

I was so intimidated by using dried beans that I didn't try them for years. But we're trying to save $$, and I realized that dried beans aren't hard at all as long as I remember to soak them the night before. I end up getting 4-6 cups of beans (or more) for about what I'd pay for one can. Now I just make up a pound or two and put a cup of the beans into baggies that I freeze, and just pull them out whenever I need them. Just as easy as a can!
