Have you ever heard of..."Your Baby Can Read"

[SIZE=12pt]I was up early this morning and I saw an info mercial on Your Baby Can Read. Has anyone seen this series? Has anyone used it? Is it as good as it looks?

There was a thread on here about it awhile back - you might be able to find it. I think the overall consensus was that no one had used it, that it looked effective, but most people thought there was no rush to try to teach babies to read. (I might not be remembering everything correctly)

 

I haven't used it, but saw something about this and similar early training programs, awhile ago. Basically it said that there weren't really any long term benefits, it sort of all washed out by about 2nd-3rd grade. In other words the kids who "read" as babies, didn't end up doing better in school long-term than kids who learned at a more normal age.

 

I saw it on tv and figured, if it was really that good and helped kids that much, then everyone would be doing it. My pediatrician completely pooh-poohed flash cards and emphasized how important it is for babies/toddlers to play, develop fine and gross motor skills, learn how to interact with others, etc. And as pp mentioned, there are no notable benefits in the long run.

I turned the tv off because it made me feel guilty that I wasn't doing "more" for my babies...
