Have you been to the dentist yet?

My pediatrician hasn't mentioned going to the dentist to me, and I haven't thought to ask about it during our visits. Today I looked up when the Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends they go and it said when the first teeth appear, or at least by 12 months. I've got a call into the pediatric dentist my pediatrician's receptionist recommended, but they're not open today for me to talk to.

Has anyone been yet, and what did they do during the first visit?

I haven't taken any of my younger kids yet but have plans to take the twins when they are 2.5. The first visit is what they call a "fun" visit and they just look around and get to know the dentist. I'm friends with our dentist and he said that unless I'm concerned then we don't need to go before 3y/o. Which is when our insurance starts covering it.

I have not done it yet either. Both my pediatrician and dentist said they don't have to go until age 3, unless there is a problem we notice before then.

I had asked my dentist a while ago, and they do not see toddlers till they are 3 yrs of age. We brush the boys teeth every day, water only, but now we also got a prescription of Sodium Floride Drops from their pediatrian who recommended it since they almost have a full mouth of teeth. It acts as an aid in the dental care until they see the dentist. Ask your pedi about it...You put the recommended dosage (drops) in their mouth (we put around the gum areas) and then brush their teeth with it.

I asked my pediatrician at their 18 month appointment and he said it wasn't necessary until age three and to just make sure we brush their teeth twice a day (with water or baby toothpaste that is flouride free). My father-in-law is a dentist and he agrees that while it might be nice to expose them to the dentist early, it isn't necessary.

a true pediatric dentist will only do a "lap visit" where the child sits facing you and then leans back into the lap of the dentist and he can look. we had a visit at 12 mo. when our son fell and chipped a tooth. we weren't too worried, but it was good to get it looked at so that we could be on the look out for any other mouth trauma etc. it was a very nice doctor's visit and not very expensive.

recently a pediatric dentist talked to our twin mom's group and he was great! he suggested you get in touch with a dentist and get "registered" to be a patient, but not necessarily have a visit...

he also suggested to brush teeth 2 times a day, and to have them sip on water all day... and keep the milk and juice for meal times so that there are times when the mouth can maintain a neutral acidity to not promote decay. it was a really interesting talk!

he also talked about getting to know if you have flouride in your water. I thought we did, but we'd been giving the kids the reverse osmosis water filtered water... and the reverse osmosis takes out the flouride! so now we just give them water out of the tap that is salt filtered, but still has the flouride in it...

anyway, good luck. I'll probably see what our insurance will cover and maybe get a visit with a pediatric dentist after they are 2yrs old.

I meant a "true pediatric dentist"... will do a lap visit when they are little... not sure when they switch to doing the visit in the chair, but probably when they are a little older. I'm pretty sure ours would NOT sit still for a visit in a chair at this point!
