Did your boys wear hats at this age (just over 1 year)?

If so, how did you get them to keep them on their heads?

If not, when would they leave them alone?

Kansas afternoons are hot and sunny! We're headed to a football game on Saturday and we took the boys to Target today to search for hats. We tried them on and they FREAKED. Pulled it off immediately. They used to wear them last summer, but then again, they were babies. Is this worth a battle of the word "no" that works so infrequently as it is?

Mine have always worn "bucket" style hats. Most have a chin strap to keep them on. I buy them at Old Navy, Gymboree, Gap, etc. They're good b/c they protect their neck as well (unlike ball caps). I "trained" mine to wear hats and not take them off by only letting them outside if they wore their hats. I would put them back on a few times and then we would go inside.

Welcome to 1-4! My kids have always disliked hats, so i have no advice.

    :wavey: Diane! Welcome!

I have no advice on the hat issue. My DS hates wearing them in the summer time, but will during the winter. Good luck!! :)

I think it depends a lot on the kid & the hat. Both mine are in a hat-loving phase right now, so we don't battle about it too much. Does seem like there's a few they don't like, though.....and since they are fine with the rest, I figure the ones they don't like probably aren't comfortable.

Have you tried any different hats, just to see if they like them better?

Now that I think about it, mine hated hats not too long ago. But I put a bunch of dress up clothes in the bottom drawer of their dresser & there's a lot of old hats in there.....they started playing with them & wearing the hats all the time, for fun. It seemed like after that they had no problem when I put them on.

Welcome to 1-4!!! My girls like to pull the hats off their heads too, but they are very fair and I burn easily so its definitely a battle I've picked.

Now that the weather has been nice they wear sun hats every time we go outside. They didn't like it at first, but now they don't protest too much. We have to use the hats with the straps that go under their chin (I think they are old navy or gap) or they pull them off. Its a shame because I have the CUTEST baseball caps for them. Oh well.. the sun hats are better because they cover the tops of their ears and their necks.

I agree. I am thinking this is a battle I am going to have to fight. Our boys are very fair-skinned, too. I am headed to Old Navy today to try and find some hats with straps...tight straps!!!

Ditto here. In the winter too, a hat or go inside.

When ds was that age I bought one of those sun hats that can be used in the water too with the tie around it. It was the only way I could keep it on. I fought of course at times. Now my kids love hats. Twins are two and DS is four. I just tell them it keeps them from getting burned by the sun.

Very fair boys here, too! I just got some great bucket hats with a chin strap yesterday at Gap. Haven't tried them yet, so I don't know if they'll protest them or not....but I just wanted to give you a tip about where to look. I got some that are navy/khaki reversible, but they had several options, all with a chin strap.

My guys didn't like the bucket hats at that age but they did very well with baseball caps as long as Daddy would wear a baseball cap as well. And that made all the difference. The toddler baseball caps usually come with a little elastic in the back instead of a clip like the adult ones and the elastic keeps them on pretty well. You will still need to use sunscreen on the backs of their necks, though.
