Not allowed them to stop working??

So far, I've had a pretty typical pregnancy..no major problems yet(I have a history of Pre-E though), however I'm so tired and just have no energy left in me by the end of my day. Not only that, my back is killing me from sitting all day long. I've said something to my regular OB, whom I know would have no objections to writing me off of work, however he says "check with the other doctor"..meaning the MFM specialist I see every three weeks. I saw them on Tuesday and told her how I was feeling, she tells me "take some tylenol and use a heating pad!" I'm kind of scared I'll be working longer than I had anticipated...and on top of that, I've got two little girls at home that need Mommy too!

I see my regular OB again on the 24th and I'm going to ask him again...in the mean time, I just wanted to get you ladies input! Thanks!

Forgot to add that my goal was working to week 27!

Yes, that happened to me. I had severe upper back/chest pains around 22 weeks. Went to the hospital for them at 23 weeks and the dr I saw said that it was normal for twins and it would get worse but that didn't warrant me not working. When I had a recheck at 24 weeks I saw a different dr and she finally wrote me a note. Been out ever since. Glad too because even though that eventually got better, I started having other small problems and I would have had to call in sick so many times. I couldn't imagine being at work for the past 2 months that would have been torture for me anyway.

My doctor took me off almost 3 weeks ago, when I was 20 weeks. It's the first time I've ever been written off.

My doctor just told me yesterday that whenever I'm read to stop working, to let him know, and he'll write me a note. He did say that getting disability is getting harder and harder, so maybe that is where your doc is coming from. Of course there are some docs who don't see any reason for a woman to stop working while pregnant unless there is a serious problem.

My drs wanted me to stop working at 20 weeks-I worked until 23 weeks when school ended-they then wrote me a note out when school started up again thi Sept. I would talk to your ob again...good luck and hang in there!

Yes, I had to BEG my OB at 35 weeks to take me off! Actually it was the midwife in the practice that finally gave me an excuse to take off the remainder of the pregnancy. When I cried to her and asked to be taken out of work, she was outraged that the OBs in the practice hadn't already allowed me off work.

my docs have never told me to stop working, but i stoped working at 20 weeks, but since my DH is deployed and im up in VA by myself, my parents felt better if i was to move down to FL and live with them until my DH comes home, right after the babies are born.... I think listen to your body, and if your able to quit working like i was do it!

I actually worked until the day before I had my twins. They were born at 36 weeks and 4 days. I was lucky though. I had a desk job that I pretty much was doing nothing at the last couple months of my pregnancy. It was nice, I was the office manager and I was able to nap when I needed to.

When I was pregnant, I just wanted a Handicap parking thing the last month or so of my pregnancy. I had a hard time walking a long distance. The doctor wouldnt give me one of those for even a couple of months. UGH!

Yes. At my 28 week check up 2 weeks ago, I asked my ob if she had a preferred stopping point for work. She told me there's not a thing wrong with me - I'm just pregnant. I should keep working if I can til the end to save my time off to spend with the babies. While I'm glad my pregnancy is going so well the lazy side of me would just LOVE to duck out of work early.

    I feel for you.

I started asking my OB about taking me off work at my 20 week appointment and she said she was not going to take me off unless complications came up. So at 29 weeks I quit my job, I was just too tired to go anymore. My OB was not going to take me off because she said disability would not cover it because medically there was no reason for it. I'm really glad I took myself off though, I'm so exhausted and this way I can take a nap every afternoon and lie down when I feel like I need to.

I can totally relate to how you are feeling...hang in there!

I started having contractions at 16 weeks and was told by my OB to take warm baths and Tylenol. I automatically thought they would not give me an excuse to get out of work when I was ready to stop. Then I decided to talk to them about reducing my hours (I figured they would be more open to that then me taking off completely) and they told me their policy was for twin Moms to stop working completely at 28 weeks. I was totally shocked.

If you plan on asking again, maybe ask what their policy is for working twins Moms. Then you'll find out if they typically don't give notes to get out of work for people unless they have problems.

    Best of Luck to you!

I go to a group practice and at 20weeks the OB I saw was great. I asked to go down to 30 hours a week due to the swelling and the exhaustion I was feeling. He said no problem. You are carrying twice the load, you must be tired. At 28 weeks I was ready to be finished at work. I saw a different OB this time for the first time and I did not like her at all for this reason and others. I hope she does not deliver my babies. Anyway, I told her I was ready to stop working and she replied she saw no reason for me not to work. I explained to her I have a 45 min commute and was having trouble pushing in the clutch because my belly hits the steering wheel. I also sat at a desk all day and was starting to get bad back cramps. I was getting like 4/12 hours of sleep. The last complaint I had other then the fact that I was swelling, was I was extremly light headed. (Turns out I have GD) I was ready to ask for another OB and she said. "Well, I'll write you off because if anything happens to you, I'll be liable." She totally discredited how I was feeling which really made me angry but she did write me off of work. I guess my advice would be to argue your case and remind them a twin pregnancy is a "high risk" pregnancy and you would hate to go into PTL because the OB pushed you to hard.

I'm still working. I have been having bad back pain esp when sitting all day working and driving home (45 min commute). I really don't want to stop before I have to due to money reasons. I'm going down to 4 days a week and I'm hoping that helps. I'm just using vacation days to do this with no note from doc or disability involved. Hopefully disability won't be involved for me until after the babies come bc we have to use 3w PTO and 1w extended illness before using disability pay.

I did start seeing the chiropractor a couple weeks ago for the back pain and I HIGHLY recommend it. It has helped SO MUCH! I have relief that I did not think was possible.

I asked my peri about this early on, and they said that as long as I felt well and there were no complications, I could plan to work up to my due date. I think that if I had requested to be out of work earlier, they would have let me, but I'm saving up my leave till after the babies come. I did just start working half-days this past week, which has helped a lot. Frankly, I think everyone at work is surprised I'm still around! I am hoping to be out of work completely the week before my scheduled c-section, just to get some rest. Looks like only 1-2 more weeks of work left for me!

Are you planning on returning to your job after maternity leave? If so, be careful. Any time you take prior to the birth of the babies counts towards your FMLA time. In my state that is only 12 weeks, and I used up 7 of them before my babies ever came because I was on hospital bedrest. So technically, 5 weeks after their birth (and while they were still in the NICU) my job was no longer protected. Thankfully I have a cool boss and they wanted to keep me right in the position I had and worked with me.

Sorry you're having to go through this. It's amazing to me how different doctors think when it comes to a twin pregnancy and working. I would definitely talk to your OB about it on your next visit. He/she may have a completely different mindset than your MFM specialist.

I know what you mean about having a goal ... mine was originally 28 weeks and now it's 30 weeks (not sure if I'll extend it after that though!). Also, I don't know if you're like me, but I'm almost uncomfortable asking to be pulled out of work ... for some crazy reason, it makes me feel guilty. Anyway, please let us know what you end up doing!
