It cheaper than flying and faster than driving. It will take about 7 hours and when we drive it takes 9-10hours depending on how many times we have to stop. It would be 2 adults and the twins. Am I crazy for considering this? Has anyone done this before??

We considered going last week from NYC to DC. In the end I went by myself (for work) and just flew. One of the deciding factors was that we'd have to pay for the girls too, even though they'd probably sit on us the whole time. If you go, have fun... bring crayons, dvds, snacks and patience!!!

We are considering it next year ( twin will be around 4) it just seemed to long of a ride (5-7 hrs) until they are done with naps.

I would go from Mid Michigan to Chicago to visit family. The train also runs notoriously late.....and it leave early am/returns late (leave at 6:30 am and gets in at 9PM) so that is part of it too.

Go for it! Might even be nicer than a car since they can get up and no 'potty' breaks.

I was looking into taking the train from NYC to DC possible in the fall ... I was more worried about not having a car once I get there ... and carrying all our stuff (PNPs, etc) ... how old are your twins?

We took our kids on a local train ride and they LOVED it ... so I actually think they would like it ...

I'd much rather do that than drive! My kids would LOVE to ride on a train. And yeah, they'll get bored and fidgety, but that would happen in the car too. At least both of you will have all your attention free to entertain/feed/distract them. And they can go potty whenever they want. Plus, there's a lot more to see out the window of a train than if you're on the highway.

My family took a legendary train ride from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh when I was growing up -- granted I was older (probably about 8), but it was a real highlight of our childhoods. Some other kids on the train went down the car passing out licorice to all the kids to make friends -- then we spent hours playing games up at the front of the car.

We've been contemplating it, but our trip is a lot longer and we'd really need a sleeper room. Which makes it more expensive than flying. I have a coworker who took the train with her 3 kids (2 are twins, but 10 years old). She said it was a great way to travel.

I think it's a great idea. so much easier as there is room to up and move. you can go to the food cart or to the hang out cart where they could play with some toys. i personally would do it if we had a long trip like that to do.
