Has anyone ever heard of this?

Has anyone ever heard of being dilated on the outside of your cervix, but not the inside? My doc said the external part is open about 2 cm, but nothing on the internal part, and my cervix is still long. He didn't seem really concerned about it. He did say no baby parts are "presenting" no head or butt, so we are sure they are still transverse? Just curious if anyone had heard of this before!

Maybe he meant that it wasn't funneling? Hmm, I don't know. I always thought if you were dilating then it was the whole cervix. I'm interested to see if anyone else has heard of this...

I've never heard of that...I've heard of the opposite...which is funneling....when you start to open up on the inside and not the outside.....hmm...

Hmm, I've never heard of that either. :unknw: My first thought is he was talking about your cervix still being long, I don't know.

I know what you mean. My ob said that there is an internal cervix (the very top of your cervix that is in your uterus) and an external cervix (the bottom of your cervix that is in your vagina)......(she put it as an internal os and external os I think). The internal cervix is the part you DO NOT want dialating, funneling or opening at all. I had my son, who was a big baby, and also a D&C, so she said my external cervix is not and never will close up tight all the way again (like it was pre baby and D&C). It is open about the size of a fingertip and nothing can be done about that. She said she would get concerned if the internal cervix starts to dialate or if my cervix shortens......those are the things that can lead to preterm labor and early delivery. My external cervix can dialate and it won't really matter much since it's the outside part, and as long as the rest of my cervix is long and closed the babies will stay put. I hope that makes sense and isn't confusing. You can always ask your doc to explain it better also....but I wouldn't worry to much about it, especially if he wasn't worried.

I have a cercalge in place and I am funneled to the stitch (external cervix), but my internal cervix is fine...but like I said, I have a cerclage in place keeping it from going further. As long as that lower/external part of your cervix is closed...you are doing well...babies are still in place and you are not open to infection.

Thank you Lynner 405 and careyayn22. That helps a bit- I looked up pics of the cervix on the internet and understood the two parts- just wasn't sure about the being open on the outside! Obviously I shouldn't do too much on the inside thanks to neither baby pushing down on- aside from an occasional punch :p I wasn't too worried since doc wasn't- he had just mentioned modified bedrest now...
