For about the past month we've been remodeling our house to sell it eventually and build a bigger one. We used to have carpet, but have torn that up in the living room, hallway and our bedroom and have stained the floors to increase the value. We don't really have any big soft blankets to put the babies on the floor now, so I have just been putting them in the PNP, exersaucer, bouncers, swings and our bed. They aren't crawling or anything yet, but I think we'll be stuck in this house for the next year so I know they will and more by then. Does anyone else have hardwood floors and what do you do? We haven't gotten an area rug yet, and I know that will help, but just wondering what anyone else has or does? Or even know of someplace that has some area rugs that aren't very expensive. I've tried looking and even at walmart everything seems to be close to $100 or more....maybe I'm just not looking in the right places? TIA

any of the home improvement stores also have nice area rugs. you can also go to carpet stores, sometimes they have nice remenants that they bind the edges of and sell pretty reasonably. also gordmans if they have any by you but the selection is very limited. also you might like the soft foam mats that fit together like a puzzle (don't know what they are called) they are only $20 at Sams club

We have a big area rug and I always put a big blanket down too (because of the dog hair!).

Although once Addison rolled onto the hardwood...but she didn't seem to notice!

We have hardwood, and so far it hasn't been too much of a problem. The boys are pretty mobile, but not completely crawling yet. They play in the living room where we have an area rug. I let them explore the hardwood and slink around on their bellies too. There have definitely been more than a few head bonks, but they don't seem to mind too much.

I second the idea of going to a carpet store. Sometimes are there are really nice, inexpensive remnants. You can get more square feet for less money, and they'll usually finish the edges for you at a minimal charge.

When the babies are mobile, they preferred the hard woods, the move faster without rug burn!

We have hardwood downstairs also. I have an area rug from Wal-Mart, I believe it was under $90. The foam mats are a good idea for a play area for them, and inexpensive. They carry them at Sams. It really doesn't seem to bother my babies.

I purchased a remnant at a local carpet store and paid to have it bound -- Remnants are essentially leftover carpet rolls from installation jobs at the store... depending on the size of the carpet you want, they are often real inexpensive and binding is usually only $30 or so.

I have big rooms and paid $260 for a 12 x 14' rug and $150 for a 10 x 12 -- totally depends on the size and quality of teh rug you get. I also purchased a 1/2" pad for underneath so it was nice and cushy.

I also purchased great area rugs at rugsdirect.com -- they offer free shipping and good prices -- but I don' tthink there is much under $100.

As for crawling... my kids crawl on their knees on the rugs and go to a 1 or 2 legged crab crawl on the hardwoods. Didn't slow them down at all.

    Good luck with the renovations.

    Cheers,

What about something like this? We have it and it could be a perfect solution. You can add as many letters as you want to make it the size you want. It's made of foam and it's easy to clean and not too expensive. And hey, it's educational too ;)

My kiddos cruise around on the hardwood floors as well as our area rugs - they don't seem to mind the harder floors. They occasionally turn over suddenly from a crouching position and bonk their head - but honestly - it doesn't seem to slow them down much - and they are just as likely to cry when they do that head bonk on the carpet.

have you thought about those foam mats for kids? they are very colorful and they can cover a protion of any room and they fit together like a puzzle. i have lamenant floors and that is what we are going to use. and they are very cheap if you can find the ones sold at the dollar general stores, or even wal-mart. like i said--colorful, and they have shapes. i think this would work for a while at least until they find that they can chew on the mats. you can also get a lot and make a mat as big or as little as you want.

    good luck and happy hunting!

we were in the process of doing the same thing, we were going to install hardwood floors, and then I thought about and decided not too, so what I did was of course shampoo the carpets really really good, but I also bought those foam puzzles mats at Toys R Us for $20, I like it and the babies like it and have fun looking at all those colors, I hope that helps.

Just a warning, make sure you thoroughly let the carpet dry when you shampoo it as there are some very toxic fumes that are released by wet carpet!!

We have the foam mats. I have one area under the play yard when they have to be secured and one area under their toy boxes.

We have hardwood and I have carpet remnants that we use as rugs - they were less expensive and are really cool. I use a thick baby comforter on the floor when they are rolling around down there - they seem to be just fine with it! The thickness of it seems to add a little comfort for them...

My boys didn't seem to have a problem with our hardwood floors. I would LOVE to have a rug but we have these evil half feral cats that think anything rectangular is a litter box.

We have hardwood throughout our whole house & the babies have had no problem with it. They are fully crawling now & they just go. They have fallen & bonked their heads a few times but haven't cried any more than they do when they are on carpet. There is one big bonus to hardwood - it is much easier to keep clean and you know it's clean. Carpet & rugs can be really dusty.

My first house had Hard woods and we always just put dd and ds on the area rugs or rright on the floor.

We are currently ripping up our floors in the office/mudroom, kitchen, diningroom, hall, main bath, master bed and masterbed's bath. WE get our new hardwoods in 2 weeks!! Can't wait.
