my poor DD the other day had a poop that was stuck coming out. She was pushing and crying, i felt so bad. I put her in a warm tubby and after a minute it finally came out. she is 5 months and only on formula right now. why did this happen and how do i prevent it from happening again, i dont want her to go thru that again [IMG]

Sounds awful! I would call your doc and ask what they recommend. I used Karo syrup a few times to get things flowing more smoothly, but you might be able to do a suppository or something to soften her stool. [IMG] Poor baby [IMG]!!

Pear juice helped my boys at that age. Now if their poops starts firming up I feed them pears for breakfast. If really constipated I give them prunes and you better get ready b/c we end up with poop everywhere [IMG]

Pears or pear juice/water work wonders.

If you've started rice cereal, that can be very constipating. You may want to move to another greain. We like Oatmeal. Also, bananas are binding. Try not to give them everyday, especially with the rice.

My boys have always been extremely constipated. We did both prune juice and extra water and neither worked. A couple times I had to use glycerin suppositories (after the ped. telling me to). Just recently, the boys have been taking mineral oil daily. It is called Kondremul. It is not the clear kind; it is white. They have not had any trouble since they have been taking it. You would definately have to ask your ped. what he thinks and how much to give.

There were many times when it would be so hard and get stuck that there would be a little blood from them pushing so hard. I would put them in the tub because the water softened it up once they pushed again. As gross as this is, I would try to chip away at it with a thermometer i hopes of making it smaller on the outside for it to pass.

Our boys eat oatmeal but they still had this issue. It is better than rice cereal.

My kids have hard ones occasionally.....I think its a combo of the cereal and the iron in their formula.

I agree with juice to help the problem and consult your pedi about why it is suddenly getting hard. Do they eat solids yet? Rice cereal can be constipating.

This is totally gross and maybe not an answer to your question, but my DDs are often constipated now (because they're on table foods and don't drink enough water), and one morning I just pulled it out with my hand. I didn't have to reach in there or anything, but I took off her diaper and saw a big one just stuck in the opening, and I took a Kleenex and just sort of pried it out. Then a whole lot came out after it. (I had never actually watched poop coming out before! Icky, but interesting. [IMG]) She was much happier afterwards.

Anyway, that only works if it's already partway out. For general constipation at that age (before starting solids or juice), our ped said to put 1/2 oz of water in the bottle with the regular amt of formula.

My DD is chronically constipated. I have to give her Miralax everyday in her bottles to keep her poops soft. If I miss even a day her poops get hard and she screams and has a hard time pooping. And I have to help her get them out because by that point their huge and hard. I'm trying to wean her off of it now that she's on food. I haven't had success yet with just solids, so I will probably start giving her prune juice every day. After bringing this up at her doctors every time I took her in (I even saved her poop once to show them and they were amazed at how hard it was), the doctor looked at her anatomy and said her anal opening and vaginal opening were too close together (about 1 cm apart) and that messes up the mechanics of everything and she will have to deal with it the rest of her life. I am thinking about taking her to a specialist for a 2nd opinion.

Since they are old enough for solids - you could try a jar of prunes. It works almost immediately for us! We feed them prunes every other day to keep them regular.
