Okay, I know this isn't necessarily a twin topic, but my little man needs a haircut badly. He's such an active little guy (even compared to his twin sister, whom we lovingly call "the ninja"), so I'd love any tips/advice you might offer for keeping a 15-month-old occupied long enough to allow the stylist to do her/his work. He's a platinum-blond, so I know every little snip will show if not done properly.

Also, DH and I still aren't sure where we're taking him, so what should we look for, ask about, be concerned about?

    Thank you in advance!

We have similar haircut questions. Though our problem is that Brandon's hair is still filling in while Colin's hair is hanging over his eyes. And I insist on both boys having their "first haircut" on the same day! :) We could have both boys' hair cut now...but Brandon's amount of hair will just be a wee bit. So we are holding off, mainly because we also don't know who to get to cut their hair (somebody at a salon who doesn't know them, or my aunt). Even though they don't really know my aunt I still think it would probably be better to do it at her house because we could at least film it and take pictures and not worry about strangers looking at us while we take pictures :)

We took our twins for their first cuts to a place called Carnival Cuts. They have cars and carousel horses for them to sit on with a TV in front of each station that plays movies. They are great with the wiggly kids and get it done fast and it looks great. They got a certificate and put their hair in an envelope for us. At the end, they get to spin a wheel and pick a prize from whatever color the wheel lands on. I know there are a few other places like that popping up around here. I think one might be called Snip Its. Maybe do a yahoo local search for kids haircuts and see what pops up.

We had to wait for DS's first hair cut until he was almost 2!!!! He was a bald baby :). The only reason we did it when we did was because my SIL was getting married and my MIL thought it was time (to look 'nice' in the pictures)...we still could have waited! We went to First Choice for his first cut...in Canada the first cut there is free and you get a certificate. After that we went to a kids hair cut place a couple of times (space ships to sit in, TVs on the wall showing cartons) but it was expensive!!!! Now DH just shaves his head...I think it looks cute and it's free, lol!

GL...I think the first one is special...for some reason I cried and even though he wasn't really a baby anymore since he was almost 2 this kind of made the transition official, he looked like such a little boy after :).

We took Henry, who is more people shy than anyone else in the family, to my stylist. She is quiet and reserved and not loud. He sat on Daddy's lap while he got his haircut. We gave him my keys and he played with those while she cut his hair. She did NOT use clippers. My older son was deathly afraid of clippers and would scream if they came near his head. If your son has any issues with the vacuum or your hair dryer, don't use clippers (to be safe, I'd have them use scissors). Also, expect imperfection because babies cannot sit still for a hair cut. Good luck.

I cut my DS's hair the first time. It was more of a trim and I have trimmed it a couple of times since then. He was probably around 18 months old the first time. It went pretty well. It works best if I do it when he is watching a movie and he is distracted. I use scissors from our hair cutting kit. I saved some of his hair for his baby book. It saves us a lot of money this way. (I cut DH's hair too).

We went to a local kids place where there was lots of distractions and they could sit in a little plastic car. The other thing to do is hold him in your lap if you can and then you have a bit more control over him. My kids are supremely active too, but they love getting their hair cut and the biggest problem we have is that they want to flirt with the stylist so they keep looking around. But, if you take them to a place that has lots of experience with kids they know how to do all the tricks :)

I cried over the first haircut too! The stylists said a lot of moms do.

My guys were such baldies, that I did their first trims at home and saved the cuttings. After they grew a bit more hair, we took them for their first "real" haircuts (at almost 2!) at the same place DH gets his hair cut. I think it's a SuperCuts or someplace cheap like that, but he has a stylist he likes, and she is good with kids. The first time we sat with them on our laps, but the next 2 times they sat on the chair themselves and I played Youtube videos on my smartphone to distract them! That worked really well, and kept them focused in one direction.

I also agree with telling the stylist to use scissors only, no clippers, and use a brush to clean the hair off of their necks, not a hairdryer. They don't need any loud noises to scare them. :)

Good luck, and I hope the haircut turns out well!

I always wondered how they cut a toddlers hair if they are crying and being combative.
Mine got their first hair cut at 12 months but it was done in our kitchen sink. Our friend said he could trim it for us (they had a bit of a mullet at the time..lol). Basically I put one on the sink and held his head straight and my friend took regular scissors and trimmed them up. Probably not the safest way but we were careful and looked great :)

I trim my DS's hair myself too. I can even do it bit by bit if he won't sit still long enough. But we are pretty relaxed if the haircut is not perfect. I agree with the advice of using scissors only.
If your DS has stranger anxiety you might have to drop by the salon a few times and chat a minute or two with the stylist before the actual haircut. I have to do this with one of my LOs with any new person otherwise he will not let them touch him.

We just took our boys last week, we went to Cookie Cutters (again a place that has the cars and movies to distract them) The boys aren't into tv yet so after the song was over Jace basically cried the whole time. The stylists were great w them and deal w it everyday so they were used to it! They look SO cute and like big boys now :(

We've done trims at home for a while now but it was finally time to take one of my daughters in, she has hair that is growing in different lengths so I needed it all evened up. I suggest new toys if you don't go to one of the kid specific places. We just went to Great Clips so they didn't have any of those fun chairs, etc. Or give them those things they don't ever get to play with like your sunglasses or the car keys. That's what ended up keeping my daughter entertained. She started getting antsy by the end. They also have a little envelope with the babies first haircut written on the front and then the date, hair sample, etc on the inside. It was nice. I would suggest a lent brush too!! My stylist had one but most do not. Good luck!!
