Jack woke up at 12am this morning. He was really wheezy, couldnt catch his breathe and was barking like a dog. He was really having to work for his breathe and i got worried So i phoned the hospital and they told me to bring him in. I took him up at 1.30am this morning and checked his temperature ears etc and told me he had croup. They gave him some medicine and told me if it started playing up again to stick him in the bathroom with tap running and to give them a phone if it didnt clear.

So we went home i kept him on the couch till 3am he had stopped wheezing by then so i put him up to bed and he slept untill 6am this morning. Wee shame for him he was all scared when he woke up cause he couldnt catch his breathe, he was really good for the doctor though doing everything she asked without moaning. He was absoletly fine this morning got up and started running about chasing Sophie! This is the second time in the last 3 weeks he has had this poor wee mite. I hope it starts to clear up soon, not wanting to do last night again very scary x

The croup is so scary! We had it twice last year. In addition to breathing in the steam, we also found that taking the babies outside in the cold air helped alot. Good luck and I hope that your little one is feeling better soon!

I have way to much experience with croup. The humidity in the bath is not proven to work (although some people swear it does, but it never did for us, and the med reports say it doesn't) but the cold air outdoors is. Wrap both of you in a sleeping bag and go out till they breath better.

If you were not given steroids to take for a few days, you are very likely to have repeat episodes for a few nights. (Steroids strengthen the neck muscles which stops the restriction. Adults have stronger neck muscles so they have the same virus with no croup.) Children are often given Benadryl which really does nothing for croup, only for the congestion (and it makes me feel better to give it to them... And they sleep more the next day  )

HTH!! I know its NO fun!

Croup is awful and scary! Cold night air always worked better for my kids as well. I hope he is doing better tonight.

I hate the croup!! and I ditto the cold air. if it is a warm night and you are dealing w/croup - stick their head in the freezer!

I also agree with the steriod thing - they make a world of difference! I have also been using my nebulizer with Addison she gets croup alot - and that seems to work.

I hope he is feeling better now!

Its very scary ! Jayden has had it twice this winter already. The first time I took him straight to the Dr and she told me about the steamy shower and then rushing him outside to breathe the cold air. I havent done it yet .. so I'm not sure how well it works ! Other than that she had me give him Benadryl for the runny nose and Robitussin for the cough.
