Our twins were born early and are now 8 months (6.5 adjusted). They spent about a month in the NICU and we were never able to fully breastfeed (I pumped to 6 months and nursed DS occasionally, but DD never got anything from me). I think because of these two things (a month spent in isolettes vs by my side + the inability to nurse), I never really felt like a real mom (I know, irrational).

My kids are always pretty consistent no matter who is taking care of them--it's been hard for me to feel like I have anything unique to offer them. I always thought that they didn't really know who I am. I mean, they smile at the ceiling fan and pot rack as much as they smile at me :)

Anyway, I came home from work yesterday and DS was up in his crib crying. After I exchanged notes with our nanny I went to check on them. I picked up DS from his crib and as soon as he saw me he went into this frenzied gleeful state where he was laughing, then hugging then sucking on my chin (he loves to suck on my chin). He kept doing this repeatidly: laugh, lunge in and suck, pull back, laugh again, lunge and suck again etc.

It was the FIRST time in 8 months that I finally knew that he not only knows who I am, but loves me too!

I don't know if this makes any sense, but I think I'm starting to feel like a mom.

It makes a TON of sense. How wonderful for you.

I think as busy moms, we all often wonder how much of an impression we are making on our babies. It's moments such as yours that confirm that there is nobody in their world like us, we ARE the world to them.

That is so sweet. I remember when DS started doing the cuddles and burying his face into me.

Soon ladies they will be climbing all over you, into your laps and hanging on your legs. Don't worry! They know exactly who you are - you're MOM!!!!

Oh, that is so wonderful! It can be really hard to actually feel like a mom when you get off to such a rough start (two babies, NICU, etc) - it is great when you finally start to feel more like a mom than another babysitter! And such an adorable moment. Just wait, it only gets better!

That makes complete sense! I remember having that feeling with my first. I work full time and I was so afraid that she wouldn't know who her mom was but I soon learned that she knew exactly who I was and that I was everything to her as she was to me. I would get the same reaction from her after being apart (minus the chin sucking- which is adorable!) Anyway- it's a great feeling and I'm so happy you have experienced it!! :)

Thanks ladies... it's nice to know people understand. So many of my friends just don't get why I sometimes feel so, well, generic. Now I just have to wait for DD to show a preference--right now, she's enjoying the embrace of her excersaucer just as much (probably more), than mine :)

Makes total sense and it sounds like a beautiful moment. I almost always feel the urge to tear up when I pick the boys up from daycare because they come running, smiling, with kisses, yelling mama! It's nice to be reminded that "yes you are important and they do know who you are!".

Oh, that is so wonderful. I know exactly what you mean also... in fact your experience is similar to ours (breastfeeding and all) and I sometimes feel the same way. It always cheers me up to see them smiling and happy when I get in their room in the morning. :)
