Had to quit nursing

I had to quit nursing abruptly on Thursday because of medication. I had to start back up on Wellbutrin and Concerta. I'm very sad about it, but there really is no other way. I was using Zoloft, but it did not work for me. I have a history of depression and it was getting worse. I really enjoyed bfing and had become a tandem pro! I discussed my options with my doc, and there really aren't any that allow me to continue bfing. I have to do what is best for me so that I can do what is best for my babies. I was wondering if this would be an appropriate place to get advice on how to dry up my milk. I didn't have time to wean. I have been pumping to relieve the engorging, but I'm afriad if I pump too much that I will just keep producing milk. I'm pumping about 3 times a day, but not even getting 2 oz. even though they are hard and full. I was really not prepared for this and now I'm not sure what to do. Thank you all and I'm jealous that you all still get to enjoy nursing. As I'm sure a lot of you know, don't take a moment of it for granted because it'll be over before you know it! :(

:hug99: I'm sorry this had to happen. I understand though. By doing what is best for you, you ARE doing what is best for your babies! They got a great start in life because of YOU!!! I wish you the best and hope the depression goes away!
Sudafed can be a nursing mother's worse nightmare, but a weaning mother's best friend! It does help dry up your supply. Some people say wearing a tight sports bra helps. Nope. Pumping is fine if it is just relieving some pressure. Don't do it too often, or for too long. Good luck!

:hug99: I'm sorry you had to stop nursing before you were ready, and I'm so sorry you're suffering from depression. It is a monster. I hope that you'll find relief soon on your new medications.

You should be SO proud of the great start you've given your little babies! Months of wonderful milk! :bow2: And you should be proud of seeking the help you need for the depression. The very best thing you can do for your babies is take good care of their mama.

I know absolutely zilch about weaning, but I hope it goes ok and you're not too uncomfortable. And I hope you feel better soon. :hug99:

Here are some links to check out:

If you decide to take sudafed, make sure to get the one behind the pharmacy counter that has the pseudoephedrine in it.

I would pump just to relieve pain, but do that every time you have pain, you do not want to get mastitis. It may take a while to completely wean but that is normal and much better for you than abrutly stopping, even more so since you were nursing twins.

You did the right thing! I don't know about weaning but I wanted to tell you that I think you made a very responsible and smart decision for your family.

Keep massaging your breast and relieve the pressure. The last thing you want is mastitis. Some women like the comfort of cabage leaves, cool from the fridge they can help soothe you.

I do have a curious question, why do you take a stimulant and a depressive? That's basically and upper/downer combo that doesn't make sense to me? Paxil is a good alternative also.

My doc "diagnosed" me with ADHD when I was 21. This is what the Concerta is for. We also tried a few different meds for depression before we settled on Wellbutrin. I'm not even sure that this will work yet. I've never had any problems with ADHD or in school or anything (straight A's, etc) so I don't really understand where this comes from, but he says I'm "Type A Textbook". It does run in my family if that matters. I also have pretty bad anxiety and was on Klonopin (pretty high dose) before I got pregnant. He said he'd like to see if some of my anxiety symptoms aren't really just part of the ADHD. I don't really understand everything, but I trust him. I was on these meds (including the Klonopin) for about a year before I got pregnant and they really seemed to help. I want to thank everyone for their support and advice!

Thank you for educating me! Really, I love to learn more things like this all the time!

I'm sorry for you, but you have to do what is best for your health! Try cabbage leaves in your bra as well as the sudafed! Also, wear a really tight sports bra and don't let the warm water in the shower hit your breasts.

You gave them everything you could, and that is truly comendable. Any amount of time bf is awsome and you gave them 3 months! In the end we have to take care of ourselves to be able to care for our little ones. Great job on making it as far as you did.

Just an fyi - but I was okayed to take Wellbutrin while nursing. (although not Concerta nor another mix of RX's). Perhaps you can discuss other options with him. Just a thought...

Kristi (excitedk)... Thank you for the links. I have been doing the sage thing. I put it in a tbs of peanut butter. Kinda hard to swallow, but it seems to be working. I'm trying to only pump if I really need to, and I haven't yet today. It's pretty uncomforable, but getting better. Thanks again everyone!

I was wondering how you were doing! If it is an option that you are interested in, going on birthcontrol can also help to dry up milk as the way the hormones suppress prolactin.
