Had to call 911 for dd

I had to call 911 last night. It was pretty awful. Ava has had a fever the last couple days and when I got home from work yesterday she came into my bedroom where I was changing the boys diapers and tripped. She got very upset and was crying so I picked her up. She had her head on my shoulder and then she stopped crying and I felt her teeth bearing into my shoulder. I pulled her away from my shoulder and dh, who was standing right next to me, saw that something was wrong. He grabbed her from me and I could see her become limp in his arms. Her eyes were open but staring blankly ahead and she was completely unresponsive. He started shaking her, calling her name, but nothing. I couldn't tell if she was breathing or not. I went to the phone and called 911. After probably 10 or 15 seconds, she came around and started crying. She was pretty disoriented but was able to tell us her name and how old she was. I was on the phone bawling to the 911 operator while dh took care of her. They sent an ambulance and Ava and I took a ride to the local ER to get checked out. The doctor diagnosed her with a febrile seizure- a seizure due to a high fever. She was so great the entire night. She let them give her medicine and take her temperature (in her bum- something I haven't done in a very long time!). Her breaking point was when they inserted a catheter to get urine (they wanted to rule out a UTI because she'd had an episode in the ER of painful urination). After the cath (at about 10:30pm) she wanted to go home. She completely freaked out, screaming, hitting, trying to bite me. I've never seen her like this. The poor thing had had enough. I don't think the emergency room has ever processed a urine sample so quickly. The initial dip was clean, but they sent it for a culture, so we'll hear later about that. We got home around midnight (thanks to my sister for the ride home) and she's home with dh today. I'm getting out of work early to be with her. She's got a follow up appt tomorrow with her pediatrician, I just hope she stays seizure free. It was a horrible experience. I'll never forget how she looked when she was having the seizure. She looked like she'd died. It was so awful. I'm so relieved though that she seems to be ok. We're all exhausted and I can't wait to get home to see my pumpkin.

    What a terrible experience. :hug99:
Unfortunately 2 of my co-workers kids had the same seizure recently. The doctor said it was caused by the fever - not necessarily because it was over 103 temperature but it's based on how quickly it got to 103. I guess when the temperature rises so quickly - it does something to offseat the brain and causes the seizure.

    Glad to hear she's doing better. :hug99: :hug99: :hug99:

I am so sorry you had to go through that. It sounds terrible. About a month ago, my cousin's daughter had a febrile seizure and had to be rushed to the hospital. My aunt told me that my cousin used to have them all the time when she was a little girl. It sounds like such a scary thing. I hope that your DD gets better soon!

How very scary! I have a couple friends who had this happen with their children. And yes, it's from either a rapid increase OR decrease in body temp. Usually it happens when it's a quick rise. However, that's also why people shouldn't ever try to bring down a fever rapidly (like with cold water, cold cloths, etc.) because the same thing can happen.

    Hugs to you, Mama! :hug99:

That story brought tears to my eyes. I'm a first time mom and didn't know what it meant to love like a "mother" until now...wanting everything to be just right for your kids. What a scary experience...I am so glad that everything is alright!

OMG that is SO scary ! I can totally relate though, Jayden had an ambulance ride for the same thing. I wasnt home, but I got a frantic call from my mom telling me she called 911 and Jayden was on his way up to the hospital ... talk about a frantic ride from work ! But it passes quickly .. just not a pleasant thing to have to experience.

    I hope she's feeling better ! :)

They also told me if it happens once, it could happen again .. not to scare you, but so you'll be aware.

Ohhhhhhh you poor thing, your poor baby, I know how scary that kind of thing can be, my twin sister's son had one at 2 years old at daycare, we picked him up and in the car he had a seizure and we just lost it. We pulled over right then and called 911! We were both bawling our eyes out on the side of the road. Finally the ambulance came, it was sooooo scary. I almost started crying reading your post. I hope you are both doing well now, I hope you and your baby get some rest. It can be so traumatic. He never had another siezure and he is going on 5 yrs old now thank god. I can't imagine that poor baby having to get a catheter, that is so terrible for her to have to go through, but you did the right thing by calling the ambulance, you never know. Thank God everything is ok now. Good luck and I wish for both of you quick healing.

We have dealt with seizures, too. It is so scary. I'm glad that everyone made it through ok, and that little Ava is okay. I know what you mean about how they look when they are seizing. It's horrible. Give little Ava lots of hugs for us, and good job for handling the situation well!

Just want you to know I know what you are going through as far as seeing your child in that state. My son (16 mo.) was in the ER 2 months ago after I picked him up from the baby sitter in a terrible state. In the ER I saw a very sick little boy who was like a vegtable. Thankfully he is fine now but hugs to you and your family!

How scary. I hope that she continues to improve.

I remember when Indira got a fever and was shaking and whining. It was so scary. I never loaded two twinfants in their carseats, down 3 flights of stairs and drove safely to the dr's in 15 min. (usually a 30 min drive). She was falling asleep in the car but I couldn't see her so I kept yelling her name and she would cry. I felt bad for scaring her but she was scaring me.

She also had the urinary catheter (4 times in the past month) so I know how awful it is to see her get that.

Keep us posted on her progress!

What a terrible experience. I have tears in my eyes just thinking about that! It really is amazing how much love you feel for your children! I had a similar experience when my daughter fell when she was about 4 months old (my husband had her on the bed and she fell off) & then again when Ethan, had what they think was a breath holding episode and turned purple! It is truly the most terrifying feeling in the word to be faced with the possibility that you might lose one of your children! I hope that she is feeling better and that you never have to experience anything like that agan!

:hug99: Your Ava is a week older than my two. Ben had a febrile seizure over the summer. It was awful. My heart goes out to you because I know exactly what it is like. The call to 911, the ambulance ride, the catheter, all of it. Hang in there. I am glad she is okay. Just wanted to send big hugs your way.

I totally understand how terrible that could be...Lucas had one after we left the ER a couple of weeks ago when he had a fever of at least 106. Very scary. Catheders, ivs, etc are not fun either.

I'm so glad she's doing better and is at home.

My thoughts are with you and your family.
