We had our breastfeeding class last night. The lady asked if anyone was having twins and we were the only couple so she would mention things here and there that was slightly different from a singleton.

Anyway, during the break one girl said so you're having twins. Do you know what they are? I said a boy and a girl. She said awww, so are they identical? Yes... one has a penis and one has a vagina. They are so identical that we won't be able to tell them apart. I didn't actually say that but I sure wanted to!

Before I was pregnant with twins, I didn't know the different types of ID twins but I at least knew what "identical" means!!

haha I've gotten the same question from family members!!! I think it's just one of those automatic questions that people ask about twins without really taking a second to think that they've already answered the fraternal/identical question by finding out that they are boy/girl lol.

Although...to be fair...there ARE technically some girl/boy twins who are ID in cases where the egg has "XXY" and then splits into twins. Weird, but I saw it on the National Geographic multiples series!

Honestly, before I was pregnant with twins I probably would have asked the same thing.

The questions don't stop with the birth. I just had the bus driver for the twins this year ask me if they were identical. LOL
If you have any questions concerning breastfeeding, I wanted to invite you to the bf forum (if you haven't found us already). The link is in my sig!

Before I was pregnant with twins I had no idea the difference.. Honestly I was naive enough to not even know that Identical twins are same sex.. One of the first things I said after the dr. told us it was twins (and that they're identical) was "OH I hope it's a boy and a girl!" My husband laughed at me and said "Identical means they'll be the same sex." :rotflmbo:

My sister in law's sister said the same thing to me. I was so embarassed for her that I just smoothed it over, but then laughed my rear off later - ha ha!

I had people ask me that even after they were born and clearly looked very different, not to mention the blue/pink thing. It was always really hard to refrain from publicly humiliating them with sarcasm and my level of success usually depended on whether I felt any sympathy for their ignorance.

This is actually not quite true. We did a big thread on it here when NG first came out with the special.(Like 2 years ago I think). I even talked it over with the peri who did my u/s this time around because somehow the topic came up. And he confirmed that they tremendously misrepresented the issue on that episode. The 'girl' in this case is actually a 'boy' who is missing the Y part of his genes. It leads to major health issues and normally the child does not live long. But the way N.G. presented it had even my mother, the mom of identical twins, telling me the next day that she had seen identical boy/girl twins in the store! No, there is no such thing as 'healthy' true identical boy/girl twins. There are some theories on how it could happen, but there has never been a documented case of it ever. Only these rare cases in which one of the identical twins is actually very ill with major chromosome problems. I believe there was actually a mother on here who lost one of her twins to this defect.

    You Aint' Seen Nothn' Yet!!!!!
Wait until they are born and you take them out in public; it gets better.

I had a cashier in Walmart tell me they are NOT twins because one was crying and one wasn't.

Old ladies tell me ALL THE TIME they aren't twins because they don't look alike.

Just the other a day someone in the medical field (PT) was looking at the girls and asked if they were ID. One is blonde and one is brunette!!!

So I decided, for all the stupid questions yet to come I am just going to agree. Just to mess with these people and get some satisfaction from it.

Are they ID? YEP, YOU BET!!!!!!!!
