So we are having 2 boys! I already have a little guy, so 3 boys makes for a BUSY household. Everything looks great. They are measuring right were they are suppose to be, acutally 1 day bigger. They are facing each other, baby A is facing up with him bum to my left, and baby B facing him in the same position. The question I have about the placenta is that they are unsure if they are identical or not. The only see one placenta, however are unsure if it is two that have fused or not. So just want to know if anyone has any experience with this?

    Congratulations on Boys!!!

We had 1 placenta, but during the U/S they too were unsure if it was fused or not. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist said what they than look at is the the membrane seperating the two babies. We had a very, very thin membrane that was nearly impossible to see at the end of the pg. The faternals, from what I understand much of the time have a very thick membrane between the two of them.

They are telling us the same thing right now, because of a very thing dividing sack they believe them to be identical, but I guess we will have to wait and see until they are here. :p

We saw a membrane, but they never said anything about it being thin or not. Guess we shall see what the next scans show

Congratulations!! We had one placenta and a very, very thin membrane as well with our boys, and they are identical. :)

I have one placenta as well - the MFM and OB have been confident that the boys are identical because of the very thin membrane. They appeared to be in the same sac in my early ultrasounds, although they are sure that there is a dividing membrane now. Pictures of fraternals early ultrasounds appear to have a very thick membrane - it reminds me of marbling in steak ...

Hi! Congrats on your boys! I found out we too are having boys! That will bring our total to FOUR boys, one girl! :) :) Wow, huh? LOL

As for the membrane comments - they strongly suspect our boys are identical also because of the single placenta - which they can't for sure say is single and not fused as I was 21wks when it was discovered, but a strong indication is the thickness of the membrane. The one separating our boys is 1-2mm thick. In dichorionic pregnancies the membrane is more like 5-7mm thick (or so I was told by the radiologist)

Its amazing to see how wispy that membrane is on u/s!! And just a slight wave of amniotic fluid is enough to send it out of view!

Congratulations to all on your twins and/or twin pregnancy!!
I too had the same question when I was pregnant with my twin girls. I was anxious to know if they were identical or not. I researched and researched all I could. I concluded that mine were identical because of the following....
    1. My first u/s at 10 weeks there was a thin wispy, floating line between the babies
    2. At my 12 week u/s the thin wispy line was barely visible and the technician said it looked like there was only one placenta
    3. Both babies were determined to be the same sex
    4. At all the later u/s the wispy membrane was not visible at all, but the membrane thins as the pregnancy progresses anyway. So, with di/di twins the membrane will also thin and may not be visible after the first trimester.

After they were born the pathology lab determined there was only one placenta, therefore identical twins. :good: :good:

    Good luck and congratulations!! ;)

I found out I was pregnant with my twin boys at 19 weeks. By then they couldn't tell if it was one placenta or two fused. We had to wait until the placenta was sent in to pathology. The results were two placentas fused (di/di), but the boys looked amazingly alike. So at 4 months we decided to get their DNA tested by www.dnasolutions.com and it turned out they were di/di identical boys. So even if their are two placentas you could still be having identicals. You'll have to wait until birth or later to determine if they are ID or Frat. Find out their blood type, check hair color etc.

Thanks girls for all the responses. I did see a membrane in between te boys. To be it seemed thin, and like a PP poster said, if one of them moved, it would disapear from view. We found out we were having twins at 9 weeks, but I was so shocked that I didnt ask any questions then about placenta's or membranes. Guess we shall wait and see!

My 1st ultrasound at 10 weeks showed a VERY thick membrane between the sacs and she said that was normal and as the weeks go on, it would get really thin and maybe not even be seen but I do not remember what she said about placentas. She wasnt sure if they were frat or ident. At my 14 week ultrasound the membrane had gotten thinner some but she did see 2 placentas. By our 18 wk ultrasound we found boy/girl so we knew they were frat but I havent had an ultrasound since 26ish weeks and I do not recall clearly seeing a membrane

    examples

my 10 wk u/s..they didnt take any of the babies together but look at the lower left and you can clearly see 2 sac with membrane

14 wk u/s harder to see now

22wk u/s - i dont see it but i guess it could be how she took the pic

Thanks for the pics Staton. That gives me a good idea. I am 20 weeks and we saw the membrane, but to me it was really thin. I didnt ask for the measurement. When I go on Sept 3rd I'll be sure to ask then if it is still visible

Congratulations on expecting Twin Boys!! As far as the placenta goes, you will have to wait until the boys are born and they can analyze your placenta more closely, and probably send it off to pathology. GL!!

We are expecting fraternal boy. Ive been getting u/s since 5 weeks pregnant due to fertility (iui). We have 2 placentas but also only have a thin membrane.

I am pregnant with monochorionic diamniotic girls (1 placenta, 2 amniotic sacks). We had tons of questions about the placenta early on too.

In addition to the relative thickness of the dividing membrane, one of the clearest indications is what they call the 'insertion point' of the membrane(s) into the placenta. If it is a T shaped insertion, it's one placenta. If its a Y shaped insertion, with a tiny gap between the the two ends of the membrane, its 2 fused placentas. Unfortunately, they say it is very difficult to get good clear images of this inserion point. And I think they can only see it early in the pregnancy (i.e. before 15 weeks or so). But if you are still early in pregnancy, its worth asking for another ultrasound to look at the placenta again. As you may already know, one placenta pregnancies carry additional risks and require more monitoring (not to mention more stress!). Between weeks 7 and 16, we had something like 5 different ultrasounds, by both techs and doctors, all looking to see if it was one placenta or two fused. In the end they all agreed, that because of the insertion point, there was only one placenta. But it took forever to sort this out...

I am 20 weeks, so I am guessing at this point it is too late, and we will have to wait until they are born. My next U/S is in about 4 weeks, and we were told they would try and see if it was really one or 2 that have fused. I think I am just resigned to waitint until they are here. I must admit though, the 1 placenta thing has me worried.

Try not to worry too much. As long as you are being watched for signs of TTTS, and your docs are on top of it, you should be fine. :) TTTS is scary but can be managed.

Did you / will you have an amnio...I wouldn't suggest one only for the frat/id question, but if you're having one anyway, there may be a test they can do...

No I am not. I don't really have a reason too. I am 29, and they anatomy scan was all good. We have one healthy little boy already. I even opted out to do genetic testing.
