One of my twins has grunted since birth. It seems 2 have gotten worse lately. She has reflux bad which I think contributes. Sometimes it is so bad she won't sleep. Will it ever stop?

Our twins were just noisy, whether they were awake or sleeping. They still can be at times! I don't have any idea why they grunted, but I thought it was kind of cute, except when it happened at night.

For us, the grunting went along with the reflux. It got better around 3 months. We got a white noise machine for our room because they were soooooo noisy!

Both of mine were grunters - we only actually kept the bassinet in our bedroom for the first two nights, the grunting would keep us awake. It went away though after a few months!

One of mine grunts and one of mine "meeps". If you watched the Bachelorette a couple seasons ago there was a girl on there
who had strange hiccups and they called her Meepers. That's what we call one of ours, she meeps out of nowhere throughout the night.
Our little one is a grunter. I'm glad to see a lot of posters said the grunts stopped around 3-4 months. Hope that it does for us, too!

My DD is a grunter too. It is gotten less and less as time has gone on but she still grunts alot. Sometimes when she's struggling to get out of her swaddle, when she is stretching, when she is eating, all the time.
My DS is a loud baby, making little moans/coos when he sleeps, and eats. I think some babies are just more vocal.
My sister told me she thought there was something wrong with her son, because she'd just sit there and listen to grunts all night long. And it eventually stopped.

My dd is still grunting away... we think we have figured out that she has poop cordination problems/constipation. We think that she is constantly grunting because she is trying to poop but hasn't figured out she has to relax her bum to poop. After she finally goes she is relieved until she starts straining to go again. we think this may be whats causing all of the grunting/billy goat sounds. We have tried everything to help her....reflux meds, soy milk, nothing works!!! I hope it goes away soon. I feel so sorry for her. She always seems like she has so much discomfort!!! Anyone else experience this??

Were your twins early?? One of our NICU nurses claimed that preemies did the grunting thing. Both of my girls grunted for the first month or 2. Now just one of them does. Just a thought.......

Yes, they were premmie-35 weeks. It has been awful tonight. She is so restless. She keeps herself awake grunting/straining all of the time. i swear she is trying to poop 24/7. We gave her a suppository to poop before bedtime and she had a good poop. She stopped grunting for about an hour but started back up again. She has been awake from 1130 until now-5am. We ended up putting her in the nursery and i have the video monitor with me now. She finally ended up crying herself to sleep while i cried on the couch in the other room with DH and other twin.

We see the ped on thursday. i don't know what he can give us to help. they've been on all the reflux meds. i really don't think that reflux is causing the grunting/staying awake though. she only spits up a little after each feeding. i wish there was some way he could help us. anyone else have a similar experience to his??? I'm having a very hard time with all of this......

 i dont know when it will go away but i'm betting it will go away sooner than later, just never soon enough when your babies appear to be hurting or uncomfortable. i'm sorry you're having to go through this, and as everyone has told me, you're in the midst of the craziness and just remember, this too shall pass. sorry i dont have any good advice, just lots of hugs and support. we're here for you.

Thanks! last night was the worst night yet....She just grunts all of the time. I pray that it will get better soon. It is very overwhelming at times. My dh leaves for work in a few and I dread being here with them all day alone. Hope it gets better soon.

Spitting up is not eased by the medication and some with reflux never spit up at all. The medication will help with the pain of the reflux. What meds is she on? Maybe she needs a change. Typically the grunting was worse for the boys at night because they were laying down which made the reflux worse. Is her's worse at night?

Mine have been grunting too! It sounds like they're so uncomfortable at times. Alyssa has pretty bad acid reflux too which makes me more conscious when she grunts. If she does it during the day, I'll usually set her in her car seat [propped up a little]. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the reflux, but she seems to fall alseep when I do that.

As far as having the babies sleep in the same room.. I can't do that, lol. The first couple nights I slept on the couch in the living room [where their cradles are at - right outside our bedroom] and woke up to EVERY little sounds they made. I got No sleep and was very irritable during the day. Now, we keep the door open just enough to be able to hear them when they cry. It's been working wonderfully for us. I get more sleep and have a lot more patience during the day!

    Good Luck!

I didn't realize they didn't have to be spewing to have acid reflux. i thought it had gotten better. right now she is on nothing....which might be the problem. i really think its that she is always straining to poop but how can you strain 24 hours a day. i don't know, she just seems to uncomfortable. she's barely even sleeping. she has been on axid and prilosec. i think i may try the axid again today and see if it helps. ive read horror stories about babies on reglan. i'm kinda scared to try it! my dr. mentioned this medication at the last appointment.

I had a grunter too. She had gas and reflux and we treated both. And we raised the head of the pnp where she slept and that seemed to help a little bit too. GL!

Did you Dr. tell you to stop the Axid? Most babies that have acid reflux are on meds for months. The meds ease the pain and allow the esophagus to heal and then once they are old enough and everything has matured usually then there will be a gradual decrease of the meds. I bet once the Axid kicks in, in a few days you will see a tremendous difference in the grunting. If not, I would make an appt and try and get on another med if possible.

Yes he said to stop them. after she had an upper gi that showed her anatomy was fine and they didn't see reflux at that paticular feeding he said to stop them. we didn't think they working. didn't know they tooka month or so to work. seems like the doctor would know that it takes longer than a week or so to work huh?? i'm starting to wonder about my doctor. he's so nice but i'm not sure he is very good. i have a feeling he is going to refer us to a specialist anyway.

Yes, ask to be referred to a Ped GI Specialist. They know reflux inside and out!
