    Hi,

I was hoping if someone could tell me if it is normal for a 3 ½ year old to be getting growing pains? One of my boy’s has been complaining about his knee hurting him for some time now. It’s not all the time. Sometimes it will be a week or two before he complains about it bothering him. There are times in the middle of the night he will wake up screaming that his knee hurts. We can usually give him some ibuprofen and a warm water bottle or massaging the area and that settles him right down. I’m just curious if I should take him into the Dr to make sure it’s not anything else. Any opinions would be appreciated. TIA

I hate those mysterious pains. Yes, I definitely think it's possible to have growing pains. My ds #1 did, and I took him to the doctor because of it. When they scream and cry like that, I have to worry. And even though I figured that's what it was, I guess my peace of mind was worth my $30 copay (well, just barely <_< ). However, when my dd was 3, she had a weird reaction to a virus and her joints were being affected, as well as her liver. Fortunately, it went away, but it had even the specialists stumped. Maybe that's why I over-reacted to Will's pains :pardon:

I agree with Heather. It might be growing pains but if my son was complaining about it enough and crying about it at night, I think I would go to the pedi about it too. You just never know what it might be. There are several other reasons that his knee could be hurting. Better safe than sorry (I always say). Sorry about your little guy's pains. I hope he is ok.

PS- I really love your avatar April! It is soooo adorable!

Mine are about 3.5 too and just recently started complaining of their knees hurting too. Now, I was about that age when my knees started hurting and I was told they are growing pains. Well, I still have this pain in my knees a good once a week. It starts as an ache and within 1/2 an hour, it is so painful. Usually a heating pad helps and some advil and it's gone. Very strange, but I think I've passed whateve it is down to all 3 of my kids b/c they all complain of knee pain.

Meghan had a couple of nights where she woke up saying "Ouchie, my legs, Ouchie". I chalked it up to growing pains.

Thank you all for your replies. I am glad to know I'm not the only one who would be worried about them. I will make an appointment to see the Dr on Monday. Unfortunately we live in such a small town that we don't have any pediatricians here, so it will have to be with a Dr that I'm not all that fond of. Hopefully they will just tell me its growing pains. Thanks Sarah, that's one of my favorite pictures of them.
