So, since this is my first pregnancy, I have no idea what to expect from this Group B strep test that I am going to have next week at my appt.

Can you guys fill me in as to what exactly they do?

    Thanks!

I believe it is like a pap smear.. gosh, I've had two of them (pos. both times) and my memory fails me!! It is very important if you are having the babies vaginally.

I had mine done about three weeks ago and it was simply a swab of the vagina/anus area with a cotton tip and it was not as intrustive as a pap smear.

Is done by swab, it shouldnt hurt at all. Mine during my first pregnancy where done just before my cervical check. They do not use the speculum. JUST a swab. If you do test positive you will be given antibiotics so that you dont pass it on to the babies. Your doctor may also give you antibiotics right away, but it is important to also have the ones during labor. Group B is not bad for adults, but can make infants very sick.

I had it with my first, but have tested negitive with this pregnancy. My doctors goal was two doses of the antibiotic before my son was born, during labor. He was just fine, and at my 6 week check up after his birth I tested negitive for Group B.

Hope this helps! :) Good luck

yup. I was positive for both my first two and I had them vaginally. It just means they hook you up to soe antibiotics while in labor. It's no biggie.

My gigantic pregnancy induced hemorrhoid didn't care for this test, but it wasn't as intrusive as a pap...

Yup, just a quick swab around the outside of the vagina/anus. Pretty painless.. I guess unless you have hemorrhoids. :p
