Gross motor delay?

My girls will be one in two weeks and neither of them is moving yet. No crawling, scooting, creeping, pulling up, etc. Both of them sit well unassisted, but that's about it. Bella was born with clubbed feet and dislocated hips, so it makes sense to me that she isn't moving yet - her ortho doc thinks she'll start walking around 18 months. But it's really starting to worry me that Josie isn't moving at all!

Is there anyone else who's child was diagnosed with a gross motor delay? Did you discover it because your child wasn't crawling? I'm taking them in for their one year checkup on the 28th, and I want to be prepared with questions to ask. Should I ask for a referral to EI or something like that? Should I not worry until they are 12 months adjusted instead of actual (they won't be one adjusted age until March 30th). I have a feeling the doctor will tell me not to worry and that we'll see how they're doing at their 15 month check up, but I would prefer to get moving on some kind of PT or something if there is a problem right away instead of waiting.

Any advice/input you have would be greatly appreciated! [IMG]

I would definitely explain your concerns and ask for an EI eval or PT/OT eval. We receive therapy now. My girls still don't crawl- they butt scoot. We are 16 months adjusted and no walking but cruising. PT and OT made a huge difference for my girls-definitely ask- see if you can get an appt sooner! There are waiting lists if you have to go outside EI for therapy -a couple months waiting list. EI is free- and you actually don't have to have your dr refer you- you can call your county health dept and request an eval. Talk to someone there about it! Keep us posted! We were 5 months behind gross motor delay! Now about 2!

    Hello Sara-
Please PM me sometime because I live right in your backyard! I also have twin girls who are almost three. Like the PP said ask the Dr. about OT/PT developmental eval. If you end up doing private PT I can give you some good names.
One of my twins has cerebral palsy. So we go to therapy on a regular basis.
The fact that both girls are sitting unassisted is a great sign. How are their hands and arms functioning?
Good luck and try not to worry too much.

Ainsley has a gross motor delay. She was referred to EI right out of the NICU. She had a significant head lag and a qualifying diagnosis (congential hypothyroidism) so, that's why she started EI. She's been about 3-4 months behind with most gross motor milestones. At 12 months, she had just started scooting on her bottom. She really didn't crawl or cruise until maybe 15-16 months.
So, to answer your question, I would get a referral to EI. Even if your pedi doesn't seemed concerned, you can still call EI for an evaluation. It can't hurt.

I would definitely contact EI for an evaluation. They will send forms to your ped for info and will ask for a lead test.

One of my boys was a few months behind the other. They said he is delayed but not enough to qualify for services but I felt better having the evaluation done.

Also, there may be a wait in some cities. I live in NYC and when I called they had 3 people visit my house in less than a week. My friend lives in another section of NY and she had to wait longer for evaluations.

    Good luck.
