We took the boys to a local salmon hatchery/run today and it was fantastic.

We had a great time, the creek was BURSTING with salmon, and the boys were fascinated with everything,

If you live anywhere near a hatchery/locks/fish ladders, it'd probably be a big hit.

Here's a link to some fun kid activities (too 'big kid' for my kiddos) that were linked to our hatchery's website.

    LOGISTICAL SIDENOTES:
*DH was with us, and I am sure I could have done this outing by myself, but they would have been stroller-bound for at least 50% of the time, and I know they enjoyed the freedom of roaming on their own. I enjoyed it much more having an equal parent:toddler ratio, which made it feel more like fun than operating a daycare field trip ;) .
*I think this activity would be GREAT for folks with younger toddlers &/or older kiddos, as it would appeal to all ages.

sounds like fun! We are in Texas so no salmon hatcheries around, but we have found nice outdoor farms with animals and whatnot which also seems to appeal to the boys as well as the girls who are considerably older.....I guess there is just something about nature that is good stimulation for all ages!

I'm so glad you posted this! We have a fish hatchery about 10 minutes away and I keep wondering if it'd be an appropriate outing for the ladies at this age. Now I will definitely give it a try!

There is a wonderful fish hatchery in Branson that we took my sister to when she was little and she loved it. We are going to take the twins soon probably next summer

We've been going to ours almost every day this week. It truly is amazing to watch their journey. My boys love watching the fish & running around on the grass. Today I let them take hot wheels with them. I was able to watch the fish more closely after they lost interest while they were playing with their cars in the grass.

There is a hatchery near my inlaws cottage, I'll have to call and see if they allow visitors! Glad to hear you had fun :)

We took the kids there last year and they absolutely loved it. They enjoyed watching the salmon jump. You should try the Ballard Locks.
