    Hello-
My babies are just over two weeks old and my ds started having some green goopy stuff coming out of one of his eyes. Is this an infection or is this post delivery mucus like what they have in there noses. I am not sure if I need to make a trip to the doctor for this or maybe it is normal????
    Any on btdt?

This sounds like what my DD had when she was 3 or 4 weeks old. I took her to the peds and they said it was an infection from where her tear ducts were clogged up. They gave me some eye drops to put in her eyes.

Try to look under the bottom eyelid- and then compare it to the other. If it's a lot redder than the other, there's probably an infection. If not- it's probably just a blocked duct and that's SO VERY VERY normal. I've taken DS into the dr probably 4-5 times for his eye- I think ONCE it was infected- every other time the dr just tells us to massage the duct area and keep it clean. ALso, if he's congested- the little that the duct does drain, gets clogged and his eye gets even goopier/teary than normal. So if I were you- I might take him once to have the dr look at and help you know what's normal and what's not, but don't stress too much, and know it's very likely that it's perfectly normal! :) Oh, and DS is 9 mos now and he STILL has a blocked duct and we still deal w/ goopy eyes- so sometimes it takes awhile to clear up!

My daughter had one really goopy eye. We had drops just in case, but it never got infected. We wiped her eye out daily a lot and we massaged it and finally now at two months it is unblocked. YAY. It is NORMAL..totally. Especially in preemies!!

Both my twins got pink eye at 10 days old, MD called in prescription for drops and was gone in a few days, pedi said it was really common.

Both of my twins had blocked tear ducts during the first three months. My DS had it for the first couple weeks and then around 2 months my DD got it. My older two children never had it. It drove me crazy because it looked like they always were dirty. THey had mucus and clumps of mucus dried up on their eyelashes. Our pedi told us to rub the corner of the eye and it woulld heal on its own and it did it just took a long time.

My DS has this....my doctor said his duct was probably a little clogged and it would clear on it's own. It's gross though, his left eye always looks really yucky and crusty. Hopefully it will go away soon!

Emma had that green goopy stuff in her left eye almost from birth it seems. We noticed it fairly early on while still in the NICU and the doctors and nurses told us it was completely normal. One of the night nurses gave us some sterile saline wipes to use to clean her eye and after a couple weeks of using those it's totally cleared up.
