For those of you who have already had your babies, can any of you share your good experiences with vaginal birth of mono/di twins? How did they do the monitoring? They clamped the cord of the first baby right away, right? How long was your labor? How much time in between both babies coming out? Epidural experience...etc. How experienced was your doctor with this type of birth?

    Thanks so much.

Could a mod please link this to another appropriate forum? (First Year or Parents??)

I can only offer my own birth story....literally the story of my birth and my id. twin sister's birth. Back then u/s were $300 if the doctor didn't see a reason to order one... and in my mom's case he insisted that she was having a big boy.... my mom kept asking again and again if she was having twins and finally she stopped saying anything b/c the doctor's were starting to look at her like she was looney. Anyway my id. sister and I were in the same sac, same placenta according to my mom... we delivered vaginally 6 minutes apart... a few weeks early, but both over six pounds. Neither of us had any problems... unfortunately my mom did hemmorhage a few days after they released her...but in those days I don't think they gave pitocin to get the uterus to clamp down hard after delivery... They are extra cautious about that stuff these days especially with twin moms... Okay, so that's my story...very little interventions...just the hand of God keeping us and my mom safe from stupid doctors!! hee hee....

Are you being induced at 36 weeks then? If so, are they checking the babies' lung development first? Just curious.

I would love to hear more about this as well! I am having Mono-Di girls (well they THINK it might possibly be a fused plancenta (they think they saw one chronic (sp?) sac)... but none the less it is now one)

my OB says I can try a vag birth if they are head down (I had one with my son) but I have had some of the same questions!

I did it - I don't know if I would consider it good - as they were only 29 weeks (and I didn't necessarily agree w/not having a c-sec at that age - long story) - but there were about 20 people in the room (NICU staff as well) they were constantly monitored by u/s - I was in labor for three days 2 and 1/2 w/out an epidural (because of the gestation length, they wanted to keep them in as long as possible) then I had an epidural (WONDERFUL) and an anestesiologist at my shoulder (he took pictures). The boys were 13 minutes apart (I had an episiotomy w/A) and I was given pitocin inbetween. Afterward it was determined that they did infact develop Acute TTTS.

Any other specifics I can help w/? or try to remember?

Great delivery here, with what is thought to have been mono/di (I didn't have u/s until 18+ weeks, by which point the placentas could have fused together). Still not sure if they're identical or not!

In any case - it was 1 placenta, or fused placentas.

I was induced at 38 weeks, 3 days. Started pitocin at 7am, broke baby As water at 9am, epidural at noon, delivered at 2:55 and 3:06pm, just a little over 8 hours.

    It was smooth sailing.

J am not entirely sure if they are checking lung development or not. My peri will not let me passed 36 weeks. I was suppose to go c-section this week (34 weeks) due to low amniotic fluid on one of the baby. Miraculously, after dealing with the condition since week 20, it resolved itself two weeks ago. The Dr. still doesn't want me passed 36 weeks due to the complications. Don't think anyone is that concerned about lung development at 36 weeks. On my weekly ultrasounds, they do make sure the babies are practicing breathing.

    That's surprising.

What other complications are you having (besides the low fluid which corrected itself)?

I had my moni-di boys almost three weeks ago at 37 weeks. My water broke at 12 midnight and we called the midwife. By the time we got to the hospital I was about 3 cm and having pretty regular contx. I progressed quickly so that by 3 or so, I was in transition and barfing (fun) and needed to get my bloowork back and get that epidural done. Epidural was fine. A little pale and sweaty feeling as he administered it... but great pain relief. Then we had a little wait for things to gear back up with some pitocin.

I could feel the first baby in the birth canal as they wheeled me into the OR. I pushed for maybe 10 minute or so and he started to get stressed. The midwife did an episiotomy and he sliped on out. He was a little pale and low BP due to the stress, they evaluated him and them took him to a special care unit for a few minutes. He was fine.

As soon as they clamped the cord from baby a, baby b started getting all the blood... TTTS. So, baby B came out pretty red but no other issues. The pedi says that extra color should go away in about 1 month. Anyway, he was born with a few good pushes about 12 minute later. Next out came the placenta and then she stitched me up.

It was intense, but I'm so thankful I was able to have the vaginally. All the nurses were really impressed. My baby a was head down from early on but baby b just flipped a few days before delivery. I was happy he was really to go and did not need to be turned. My midwife and OB were still willing to go the vaginal route with only baby a presenting head first.

Hope this helps. Anything else you want to know just ask.

oh, btw, my 37 weekers were healthy but not quite strong enough to get enough milk via nursing. We had to start supplementing after 1 week. Now I have decided for many reasons to pump and give bottles. Mostly because my nipples were so painfula nd one had an open sore, fighting mastitis due to open sore, and because i have alot of help around to feed while I pump. Plus, we just know they are getting plenty to eat. They got down quite a bit below their birth weight (I think double what they allowed) and even the LC's said supplementing was needed. Of course, they suggested SNS but we were just not good at it once we got home so, bottles became our answer. Guess everyone is not meant to nurse. If you give it a try best of luck.
