Can anyone recommend a good/reliable ear thermometer? I bought a CVS brand one and it was like 3 degrees off the reading I was getting when taking rectal temp. I would just like a quick, easy and reliable way to take temps .. esp in the middle of the night, Thanks!

We changed from an ear thermometer to one that you rub from the forehead to their hairline. Our ped. starting using it and said it is more reliable. It is called Temporal Scanner 2000C. It can also be used on infants which is nice. I got it at Walmart for about $39, and that is where peds. office got theirs too, I asked.

We also use a temporal thermometer. BTW you are going to get different results when you take temperature (rectal vs ear) differently. There is a great FAQ here. It tells you what temperatures to expect for each method.

I also ditched my ear thermometer for a temporal thermometer.

Ditto the temporal thermo here. I *love* that thing. So much easier than an ear thermo; just hold the button down and swipe from center of forehead to temple. Done. And a pp is correct about different readings depending on the location taken.

Ditto on the temporal thermometer. Love that thing. Nick, who is VERY prone to febrile seizures, actually leans his head forward when I pull it out. It is great and I have checked it several times with rectal and it is always very accurate (if you account for the differences as pp mentioned.) We got ours at Sam's Club for $25.

Ditto, here! I love the Temporal scanner. My pedi said just to be consistent in using the same thermometer each time we take their temps. And when we visit her, I always tell the nurse that we use the temporal one.

I ditched my ear thermometer and just use a digital thermometer rectally.
