We've planned a trip with a lot of friends/toddlers to the National Zoo in Washington DC on Saturday. The weather is expected to be about 92 with 60% humidity and a uv index of 9. I tend to be over cautious with the sun but was wondering what everone else thought. Would you take your twins? We have a wagon with a cover, doesn't provide that much protection, and of course we sunblock to the max...but I'm still very unsure. What do you think?

I live in New Mexico where it's always 90+ degrees during the day and a UV index of 9 or 10. So to go out at all, we have to brave the heat and sunshine. I'm sure it's not the ideal situation, but we just bring lots of water, everyone wears hats and we slather on the sunscreen.

I would think at the zoo you'll be fine. There are drinking fountains and I remember a few sprinklers set up last time I was there that you could use to cool off (I lived in DC for 10 years). Have you been to National Zoo before? It's all on a hill so I would think a stroller might be easier to manage than a wagon, but maybe that's just me.

We just went to Disney World this past Sunday and it was HOT! I'm not sure how hot exactly. We just drank alot of water and used sunscreen and dressed the kids as light as possible and they did fine. Plus, with it being the zoo, they probably have some indoor attractions that you can hide in for a few minutes to cool off. Good luck and have fun if you go!

Sounds like good advice...the hats are sort of a problem...How does everyone get their 13 mo. olds to wear a hat..it's exhausting- they won't leave them on!!! Even with a strap...I know that hats would help shield the sun sooo much but they just won't wear them! Disney! WOW! We were planning that in October! Bet it was a blast!!!

We went to the zoo in heat like that last summer. My kiddos did fine, but most of the animals were either hiding away in shaded buildings or just laying down. We didn't get to see much!

    Hi Kristy,
We are actually planning a trip to the National Zoo next Thursday the 19th. :) I would go, in fact we did last year and it was HOT. We just put sunscreen on and tried hats (but they wouldn't leave them on) and just put the visors up on the stroller. Have fun.

I would go. It sounds like a lot of fun. I would probably take a stroller instead of the wagon though. Oh yeah I can't keep hats on my girls either. One of them does ok but the other will not leave her hat on.

Hate to be the Debby Downer here but I went to the zoo a few weeks ago and I was MISERABLE! The only thing that saved me was a tiny splash pad that they have for the kids. I literally soaked my overalls with water just to keep cool. One thing I did for the boys was to keep pouring cool water on their heads. They seemed to really enjoy it. There weren't many areas to escape the heat at our zoo so you might have better luck. And as for the hats, mine aren't having it either :D .

Hey, did you say you're going to Disney in October? So are we! We had planned it for July then I came to my senses about the heat and crowds and one-year-old twin mix  .

I hate the heat, so I'd have to say no as well. But to each his own! If you think you'll still have a good time, then go and have a great time!

Being from Central Florida, those are conditions we deal with every day. It can be challenging at times, but I wouldn't let it stop you from having a good time. Obviously, bring lots of water and sunscreen and plan to go indoors whenever you can.

We just went there in May and had a great time. Check out the directions from the webiste because we ended up going downhill all morning and having to go uphill in the afternoon. I would have rather had it the other way especially now that it's warmer.

Hey, we have a National Zoo trip planned for Saturday too! We are in the exact same spot, trying to decide whether or not it will be too hot. My girls are older, so they might tolerate the heat better.
