Going Fall Clothes Shopping....

My twins turned 2 in May. It always seems like clothes that are meant for their 'height and weight' are so big on them - specifically pants. They are NOT particularly skinny at all - DD is about 30 lbs and DS 31.5 lbs. or even higher. 2T pants practically fall down on both of them. DD, well, she has no butt so I can understand...But DS has a bubble butt (lol) so I don't see how this is an issue. In fact, for his age, he is 90% for weight and 75% for height. I have to get the 2T because they need the length, esp. as DD is already 37.5 inches (off the chart) in height. I see they have the pants with the adjustable band in some stores, but I just cannot understand why my twins at their weight have the appropriate clothes falling off of them...Even the tags say 29-33 lbs. or something like that. With DD the pants fall to the ground...Her waist is seriously a 12 month size because of the no-butt issue. All her shorts for the summer I had to buy in 12 months, no joke. She is just now fitting into the 18 months size shorts at the end of the summer! (The 12's are tight now, thankfully - finally!) LOL...One pair of Gymborees I had to buy in 6-12 months! Needless to say they are very short on her, but at least they weren't falling off!

Anyone else have this issue?! I am very frustrated with fall shopping. I find myself having to try things on them constantly which is very frustrating for 2 year olds in the store!

Yup, I am not looking forward to long pants and shirts weather! My 2 are pretty small (22 and 24 pounds) so most everything falls down unless it is 6-12 month size.
I bought some of these below that have been wonderful! Just look for pants with belt loops.

I feel your pain! Jacob has been a size 18 months for like 18 months of his life, it seems! He is my skinny one, about 24-25 lbs. I wonder if he will EVER outgrow 18 mo size, because even if he does, once he potty trains he will probably be right back in them! Jackson is bigger, but still swims in 2T's. I do have some luck with adjustable waists, but they still seem really big.

Just a thought: maybe you could bring one pair of properly-fitting pants for each child to the store with you and just compare the waists & lengths so that you don't have to wrangle with them in the dressing room? I've never done it, but it might be somewhat helpful.

    Good luck!!

Try shopping at Old Navy. Their clothes run much narrower than Gymboree and Osh Kosh. Each manufacturer cuts their clothes differently. I found that Gymboree cuts them very wide. We did have more success there with the regular sized clothes as opposed to the "t" sizes. I think it starts there at size 3. But you can get a 3T or a 3, the 3T's were always way too big, but the regular 3's fit great.

    Good luck!

BTW, Adjustable waists are a lifesaver! I have one boy who needs a size 8 for length, but is really more of a 6/7 for his waist. The sad part is that I am now out of the "little boy" area, and into the regular boy area!

I definitely felt your pain with my older DD! She's always been very tall and very slim -- even now, her waist is about a 4, while her height needs a 7. It's really, really hard to find pants that aren't floods on her. In fact, she doesn't like jeans, and she doesn't even own any regular pants -- she lives in dresses with leggings underneath, where you can get away with fudging the length. Maybe try that for your DD?

My twins, however, are huge, and I haven't had many clothing issues with them -- except for their moving too quickly through sizes, LOL. Karina can only wear a few 3T's still, and is mostly in a size 4T (she's off the charts in both height and weight), and Kevan is solidly in a 3T. Of course, we haven't had to do pants in awhile -- that's always challenging.

    Good luck!

ETA -- are they out of diapers? I know we'll have a harder time with clothing when mine no longer have diapers to hold pants up...

Just want to say I feel your pain! Mine are super tall and super skinny. Cloth diapers (which are bulkier than disposable) are the only reason their pants stay up, and that's even with adjustable waists. One day, in a pinch, we had to put DD in a disposable diaper, and her 2T jeans (already getting too short for her, btw) were falling down around her ankles, and we couldn't keep them up. And these were relatively slim-cut Old Navy jeans, with the waist cinched as tight as it could go.

So I'll be watching here for inspiration!

Have you been able to find a particular brand that works? For example, I always avoid Gymboree and Carter's because they run bigger than my kids need. However, we have a ton of luck with Children's Place for Ben and Old Navy for Hannah.

I can relate! My kids will be 4 in December; one is much smaller than the other. I just bought pants in size 3T and 4T (for each twin). I bought some pants at Target and some at Children's Place. When I compared the pants from Target and Children's Place (in the same size) there was at least a 2 inch difference in the length of the pants! I think it's a great idea to bring along some clothes that you know will fit to compare at the store.

    Good luck,

My DD wears the leggings all Fall and most of the winter since they stay on her! Love them from CP and Old Navy!

I never used to have issues with clothes fitting my children, but now that they are out of the baby phase and toddler phase, my twin girls don't fit in much when it comes to jeans. I am having the hardest time. I bought a ton of jeans at Old Navy, only to discover they were too snug. Even TCP are fitting too tight. They aren't chunky girls either. I just ordered some jeans online from gap, and hoping for some miracles. I do find that gymbo fit good though. They are having a labor day sale this week and weekend, so will be checking out what they have.

I always had the opposite problem. My girls apparently had short legs but chubby tummies. :) They wore size 24m or 2T until they were at least 3 and maybe 3.5, because the 3T were too long. Just in the past 6 months or so, they have really shot up so that 3T pants actually fit them.

But as soon as they quit wearing diapers, their pants started to fall down. We have some really cute Gymboree shorts in size 2T that they still couldn't wear this summer because they fell off. I'm thinking they may never get to wear those shorts, since next summer they'll barely cover the kids' butts.

The brand that seems to fit them best is Hanna Andersson -- but I could never actually buy those (too $$$), we're just lucky that we get a ton of them as hand-me-downs from my SIL.

It looks like you're dealing with the classic struggle of finding clothes that actually fit! My kids had similar issues with pants being too long or falling down, even when they were in the right size for their height and weight. The adjustable waistbands have been a lifesaver, but it's still a hassle to try things on in-store. Maybe check out brands that offer more variety in fit. I know boston proper is more for adults, but it’s frustrating how inconsistent sizing can be in general. Hopefully, you find some pants that work soon!
