My doctor was rushed the last time I saw her, and she said that on my 26 week appt we'd do a glucose test. She said that I don't have to fast during the day before the test, but that I should drink the orange stuff they gave me 45 minutes before I get to the office, and shouldn't eat or drink anything after that.

I know I got her instructions right, but I don't understand how what I eat all day long will not mess up the results of the test I take at 6pm? And what if I drink the stuff but then end up stuck in the waiting room for a long time past the appointment time? Will that matter?

Just wondering what your experiences have been. Thanks!

My appt wasn't until about 3 in the afternoon and my dr just told me to eat regular before my appt just don't go out and eat 6 donuts before or anything. And I'm sure they will make sure to draw your blood when you check in if they know you are doing the glucose test I would just make sure the person at the front desk knows you are doing your glucose test that day. When I did mine I drank the drink there at the office but when I checked in they sent me straight back to the lab to drink the drink and made sure I came back to the lab an hour after I drank it. HTH!

They want to test your sugar levels after a normal day of eating. If you ate a lot of sugary stuff before the appt, then the levels will be high, so I dont recommend that.

Eat how you normally do, and they will see how your body is doing. I would stay away from the immediate urge for ice cream or something tho!

If it comes back abnormal, then you go for the long test, its like 4 hours or something, and I think for that one you dont eat, and you drink their fluids on and off for the 4 hours, and they do multiple tests.

They put you on a timer as soon as you get the drink and they call you in when the timer goes off after 1 hr. (At least that's how they do it at the clinic here), so it shouldn't mess with your results.

This test is just a screening, so if you eat normally and your body demonstrates that it can handle sugar (your blood goes back down to normal levels), you don't need the second test, which requires fasting and a 2 hr test to see how well your body manages the sugar in the drink.
