We are most likely going to name our baby boy James, possibly James Anthony. James is my dad's name. We don't have a family name we love for the girl--not sure if that's unfair to give one baby a family name?? For the baby girl, we're thinking of

Amara
Charlize
Sofia (love it but just heard it was ranked #1!!! which bums me out a bit).
Juliette

I'm not as worried about the girl's middle name because we have a few ideas.

Thank you!!!

Where did you hear this?? I have a Sofia! I know with the 'ph' it is in the top 10 but with a 'f' its in the 50s.

As you can see I am biased towards Sofia but I also really like Charlize. :)

Well, I should clarify. The list that just came out on the news (I think babycenter?) said that when you combine the two spellings, it's #1. ph is more common than f though. Thank you for your feedback. Our last name is Italian so Sofia sounds so pretty.

Oh ok that makes me feel a little better. Because if you take all the spellings of another popular name such as Madison then that could be #1 also. phew!

The 'ph' is way too american, I liked the 'f' much better too as they are german and portugese. Another thing that was brought to my attention about 'popular' names is the last name... if you have Sofia Jones or Sofia Smith the name as a whole is more popular than a less common last name.

And I love Sofie! I dont know what else my Sofia could have been, she looks like a Sofia! :)

I like Sofia, but I'm not sure how strongly you feel about popularity of a name being a big enough negative that it rules it out. I eventually came to the conclusion that it mattered for trendy names, but not names that had a history or tradition. Sofia (Sophia) has such a nice meaning.

I do really personally like Juliette. It was one that I considered and still like lots. Would you be comfortable with the nicknames derived from this name though? Juliette and James sound nice together too. Will James go by James or some other variant?

You're doing much better than us having the boys name narrowed down. Good for you! When I was admitted it was one of my biggest concerns and the whole first night in the hospital was spent debating and going over boys names!

I like Sofia & Juliette. If I had a girl we were going to name her Julia.

Thanks you guys!
Kerry, too funny, I think I'm coming to this sub-board in-cognito :) We haven't told friends our names so I'm so glad this board exists. I did tell my brother but that's it! What nicknames do you think will come with Juliette? I'd really like to keep the name James rather than any variant or nickname.

Here's the babycenter list that was all over the news a couple days ago: apparently any names spelled differently that sounded the same were lumped together....

Top 10 girl names Top 10 boy names
1. Sophia 1. Aiden

I personally lean towards Amara as that is the middle name of one of my twin granddaughters. Sophia or Sophie would be my other choice.

I guess I'm the odd one out. I like Amara. ;)

I also love Juliette, so classic. By friend Juliette goes by Jules, which I assume is a common British nickname for Julie/Julia/Juliana/Juliette.

I like Juliette/Juliet with James, both J, but not similar sounding...

I really don't like Charlize (sorry) sounds trashy to me.

I already know two Sophia's that are the boys age so it will probably be very common... I really love Juliette!

I loved Juliette and had it on my list, but DH was afraid that as part of b/g twins her brother would always be teased and called Romeo . . . I have no idea if that would have really happened, but that's why he nixed the name. I love Sofia, but didn't want to use anything so popular.

Of your other two, I really like Amara - it's unusual, but not "strange". I don't really like Charlize personally . . . you asked for opinions, so I'm giving mine! :winking0009:

Good luck deciding.

Sofia is so pretty! I know what you mean about the common name thing. I have always liked the name Jackson (Julia Roberts named her son that in Steel Magnolias), but now Jackson and Jack have become so popular...I decided to do it anyway. In 5 years it will be different names that are popular so I figured eventually it wouldn't matter.

I also like Juliette. That would go nice with James. I like the "J" thing. I am a fraternal twin myself with my brother being named James (my name is Jayne). Always thought it was cool we had the same initials even though I am not naming my twins the same initials.

Do you like the name Charlotte? I don't care for Charlize but love Charlotte. For B/G twins, I think James Anthony and Charlotte Amara would be beautiful together!
