Gifts for first birthday?

We are planning to have a party for our babies on their birthday, and I’m wondering if we should let people bring gifts or ask for no gifts. We have a ton of toys but who knows what they maybe enjoying as they age a bit. The toys we have maybe getting too immature for their growing minds. What are you or did you do for your kid’s first birthday. We also have college funds set up but is that tacky to ask for only contributions to the funds.
Mods. Can you link this to 1-5 yrs. they may have some suggestions. Thanks

 

I always ask for clothes - we seem to always suddenly run out of clothes when they turn a year old.

 

I would suggest summer clothes, we got some in Feb. and it's great to have a head start on it already, a wagon, ride on toys, if you don't have some already.

 

Nice to have spring babies. You can always get outdoor summer toys - balls, sprinklers, etc. that you may not already have. I agree with the clothes suggestion. Especially anything in larger sizes because around a year you usually start running out of the clothes you got as gifts when they were born.

 

My girls got tons of clothes, a few toys, money for their college fund, a cool baby pool/slide combo thing, bathing suits/hats, shoes, and my BIL (who is also Grace's godfather) made them the most beautiful little personalized table and chair for their toy room.

We got them a wagon and preemie dolls made to the size/weight they were when born (although those haven't arrived yet).

I was glad to not get too many toys because they just got so much at Christmas time that more would have been crazy!

 

I was thinking outdoor toys too...mine aren't one until October...but we will probably spend most of our time up at the cottage this summer so I am already looking for things they can play with outdoors and in the sand.

Clothes are also a big hit...my SIL's twin girls just turned one and they mostly got clothes at their party. I am hoping mine get clothes too!

 

My mom is buying them their first real shoes. Other gifts will be tricycles, wagon and a slide for outside.

 

BOOKS!!! Mine got these Peek-a-boo books (DKBooks) that they LOVE for their first bday!! Add this to the list!
